It's a shame the expert they quote doesn't know Atkins is not a high protein diet....

Clayton said that the main problem of high protein diets is in the strain they put on kidneys and the risk of renal failure.

Re: So on the news tonite...

I hate stuff like this. The media comes out with a blanket statement about something being dangerous without really researching the situation fully. Ketoacidosis is dangerous and indicates, I believe, of starting to go into a coma. I would bet this woman had some kind of underlying diabetes whether she was aware of it or not, prior to eating a low carb diet. There are a lot of undiagnosed diabetics out there. There is a big difference between being in ketosis and ketoacidosis.

This kind of reporting makes it really difficult to admit I am on a low-carb diet because people jump to conclusions that it is dangerous and try to warn me about the harm I may be causing myself.

But it does have this statement in it, which I think is important.
It is not brought on by diet unless she had an underlying cause which she and her doctors weren't aware of,
I didn't find that article to be totally all doom and gloom and negativity....but I know we'll be hearing "Oh, Atkins causes coma!" from people who don't understand the whole thing.

Exactly! I liked this comment in the first article mentioned...

"I think this is an isolated case. The idea that serious ketoacidosis could be triggered by a low-carb diet does not happen very often," said Dr. Paul Clayton, president of the forum on food and nutrition at the Royal Society of Medicine in London."

I just wish the TV news media would tell the whole story, not just the blurbs becuase the blurbs are what make us embarrassed to tell anyone we are on Atkins.

I just tell people I am watching my surgar intake and eating healthier foods. I just don't say ATKINS around anyone...crazy isn't it? But, when I get to 118, then they'll want to know, and I'll still tell them what I am eating, and what I am not...

Frustratingly irresponsible on their part. Isn't it sad how little the "news" is actually that, these days?

"It is not brought on by diet unless she had an underlying cause which she and her doctors weren't aware of," Bloch said.

"Ketoacidosis is an abnormal state that occurs when there is a clinical abnormality. It doesn't occur when there's a normal state like a low-carb diet."
                    Correct.

Exactly, Lynne! Was she really following it or was she doing her own thing and calling that "Atkins"?

I've seen some pretty interesting interpretations of this diet by folks who haven't bothered to read the book....

People are always going to say things about this diet........thats just a fact.I dont bother mentioning "atkins" when I talk about how I eat. I just say I have decided to eliminate sugar and lower my bad carbs........seems to do the trick.
