  • Any thoughts on popcorn?

I occasionally like to eat popcorn and it never throws me out of ketosis, but I have been learning that even if something doesnt throw me out of ketosis, it will still stall my weight loss (i.e. sugar free candy)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.....!

If you're following the rules, then it's not legal until the starchy veggies rung of Owl. There are lots of things that won't necessarily throw you out of ketosis that aren't legal in the beginning stages, particularly induction. The risk is triggering cravings and setting off bad eating behaviors. And even if that doesn't happen, you shouldn't use any of your induction 20 carbs for empty popcorn carbs. You need the nutrition of green veggie carbs!

      Sounds exactly right, thank you!

Do you think that low carb spagetti sauce triggers cravings?

I think that depends on the individual. Tomatoes aren't a trigger for me, but some people have a lot of trouble with them. Also, it can be associative. If you used to eat spaghetti sauce with a heaping plate of spaghetti, then your body might "expect" them.

This is the one brand of popcorn I eat pretty frequently, and you can find it at Walgreen's in easy little single-size servings.

For the entire bag, the Kettle Corn flavor has 18 total carbs & 3 fibers; the Double Butter contains 16 total carbs & 4 fibers.

There are two other flavors, Butter & Natural; however, their carb counts are both 24. Not bad, but a bit higher. Of course, no popcorn on Induction! I did not have it regularly until after I hit goal.

Any food can trigger cravings based on your body. Celery triggers me eggplant and tomatoes together trigger not2late. test a small amount of it and be ready if it does.

Be very careful with any lower carb pasta noodles you buy and be sure the ingredients are accaeptable for the OWL level you are on. yes some noodles do cause cravings. Dr Atkins in the premaintnenave phase of DANDR ( which is why i tell folk to read the whole book not just the chapters about the phase they are currently on) talks about some foods that each of us has that can be a triggering out of control event and if you know a food does that too you then don't have it. OWLers need that info too when they hit the rungs.

This is an awesome thread--it never occurred to me that I could ever eat popcorn again. I figured it would sort of be one of those perpetually evacuated foods like Oreos.

But here's my followup question: what's the carb count of that movie theater butter (aka my secret shame)?

Popcorn is okay, provided you are in the phase that allows grains. I eat it on occasion in my OWL.

I've never liked the taste of the microwave popcorn---too salty and the greasy coating in my mouth is too yucky. So what I do is buy the popcorn kernels. I buy it for 88 cents a pound at Walmart. Depending on the brand of popcorn kernels, 2 measured teaspoons of the kernels is 5 net carbs and that amount pops to about 1 1/2 cups, which is a pretty good serving for me (at least).

Anyhow, I either pop it in a saucepan or I microwave pop it by putting it in a paper lunch bag, folding down the top and popping it as you would a commercial microwave brand. Then I season it whatever way I like.

I'm gonna pick that up at Walgreens on my next trip! Thanks Sheila!

Sometimes I eat the Kettle Korn by Orville Redenbacher .. its sweetened with Splenda and doesn't affect me. I never had any popcorn until well into maintenance....

k-b-s - Popcorn is actually one of the better snackfoods for you once you reach the higher rungs of OWL. (I think it's starchy veggies, not grains, since it's just dried corn kernels, but I'm not sure.) Since it pops up, there's a lot of volume for the total carb value.

Movie theatre popcorn can be carbier because they sometimes use powdered processed butter, and even their oil may be questionable. And it is LOADED with saturated fat. I bet theatres have to provide nutritional information if requested, like fast food restaurants, so you could try to find out exactly.
