  • Question about fasting......

I know that you are not supposed to fast on the Atkins diet. Who likes doing it, anyway???? But, I guess my question goes out to Christians that occcasionaly fast for prayerful reasons....
Can you drink a V8 or something to keep your blood sugars stable? Even if it's just giving up a meal a day, I hate to throw myself into a tailspin!
    Any help would be appreciated!

In the past when I have fasted (pre-Atkins of course) I have just sipped on broth or fruit juices.

Thanks for the tips. The broth sounds like the best way to go. I think that it would probably be the best thing to keep blood sugars stable. I've never had a protein shake, but it sounds like a "liquid meal"? I could be wrong. Thanks again!

Lol, I almost do a combined diet - slim fast and atkins . The atkins shakes are only 5 carbs total and provide a good amount of vitamins for a low amount of calories. It is ideal almost in my opinion. Usually I only take one meal a day and fill the rest up with a nice large protein shake and lots of water.

So yeah, I would try an Atkins shake ((liquid meal)) or Whey Protein. Even Carb Solutions is pretty good.

            Re: Question about fasting......

Assuming you're not diabetic or suffering from fasting hypoglycemia, I wouldn't worry about your blood sugar much during a day of fasting. Will your blood sugar will be on the low side, your body is capable of producing the glucose it needs to see you through the day.

I would not recommend taking any fruit juices. These will cause a your blood sugar to rise quicly resulting in an insulin spike causing a quick drop in blood sugar. This can cause hunger pangs and weakness.

If you're serious about fasting for spiritiual / religious reasons, just take water and take lots of it. If you want to take in something, go for clear broth instead of fruit juice.

            Edit:

I just saw the other posts just now.

From a Catholic standpoint, a protein shake somewhat defeats the purpose of fasting. The same goes for fruit juices.

Here in the Philippines, the two types of fasting practiced are strict fasting where only water is allowed, or a less stringent fasting where a small bowl of soup and a piee/slice of bread is allowed each meal. Anything beyond that is no longer considered fasting but a form of abstinence.

the problem with this is once you lose weight how are you going to keep it off if you haven't learned to eat properly and gone thru the rungs to see what your body can handle? You can't live like this for the rest of your life, 2 shakes and one meal a day. I've never met anyone who lost on slimfast (or any plan including jenny craig where your meals are 'prepacked' or liquid) who kept any weight they lost off. You need to learn to change your eating habits, not do a quick fix crash diet plan, if you want to be successful.

You wont find anyone on this board at goal who lost their weight by replacing their meals with shakes everyday or is doing it in their maintainance, I guarantee it.

You're not doing atkins properly, it was not meant to be a crash diet, or a liquid diet..that's not what those shakes are intended for. You may lose weight inthe short term, but you will not keep the weight off if you don't treat this as a new way of eating and way of life. You need to learn how to change the way you eat..for life.

That is very true and I agree completely. But currently I'm a high school student and I don't even get home until around 4 p.m. and I don't like eating past 6. I drink an atkins shake at school for lunch and prepare a good meal at home ^^ It's just more convenient for me if I do it that way. On Saturdays and Sundays I eat regular meals with a string cheese snack :P

Edit: Btw, what you've said has applied to me before. The reason why I'm such a yo yo dieter is because I don't think as diets as a way of life. I"m trying to change that ; ; I know to keep the way I am I have to change my eating styles :P

                  Re: Question about fasting......

Well it's good that you realize that isn't the proper way to do it..but is there no way you could have breakfast at home, and bring your lunch with you? is there nothing legal offered in your cafeteria? There are alot of quick options you can make ahead of time for breakfast and heat up in the microwave, you can bring cheese strings to school for snacks, and make a proper lunch. It's good that you realize you shouldn't be yo-yo dieting, but at your age it's probably the perfect time to change your eating habits! It's much better to change your habits when you're young..trust me. It's good that you are trying to do that...Though I do know it's hard at that age. But the benefits will be worth it. Oh if i could only go back.... .

                    Re: Question about fasting......

Oh ... if only I could have learned this "Way of Life!" while I was in highschool!!! The second time (this is my 3rd, lol) I decided to give the "low carb" (won't say Atkins because that's not what I was doing) diet a try, I too drank the shakes and even threw in the bars. Trouble was ... when it came down to filling up my car with gas, paying for day care and buying toilette paper - there was no more money for the expensive shakes. Close to $6.00 for 4 8-oz shakes is a LOT of money! Now, $6.00 buys me veggies, cream cheese and one or two more things. lol ... I guess it's all how you look at it. When and as soon as you can make it a WOL (which, I'm new but am really taking it serious) .. would be the best for you. If you're in high school NOW and ... well .. you don't want to be 35 like ME now and doing this. If I knew then about this, I'd NOT weigh over 200 pounds.

Good luck to you sweetie!!! I'm sure you can do it!

1 week to go until my next weigh-in.

I just take my vitamins as they help to regulate the blood sugar, and drink tons of water. To me personally, fasting is a very important part of my religion and doing a *diet* that would not allow me to practice my religion, would not last for me in the long run. I have made them both work as my religion and my health are both very important to me. I need to nourish both my soul and my body.
I would find a way to make it work asap, that way neither is being sacraficed...and this can truly become a WOL life for you.

I hope you find what works for you PM my if you need anything
