  • Good Fats Bad Fats

    I need help with fats. I know olive oil and mayo and butter are good but what about meat fats. I read in the book that you can eat the fats in meats. Is that so. We raise our own cattle and pigs so beef and pork are my main meats. Is that a good thing or not? I eat a lot of steak and burger. It is the biggest part of my meals.

    What are the other good fats and bad fats? What are the products they are found in. I don't know where a good place to research this subject is. Any info would sure help.

    I have been on Atkins for about 3 years now but have been falling off track and have put about 10 lbs back on. My worst enemy is my In-Laws. They know I am on Atkins and they invite us to dinner quite often and they alway have a everything in one pot meal that in NOT Atkins friendly. They think I am rude if I don't eat and they think I am upset with them if I don't come to dinner. I am not really sure how to handle this one....I need to get back on track and do a strict induction.

    Sure could use a little help on these matters, but really want to learn more about the FATS.

    avoid transfats if it says hydrogenated avoid it!

    cuts of meat have mixed fats in them if you look at the breakout of fat in a fillette migion SP? you will see it is actually leaner then a chicken breast and has less saturated fats too. most folk think beef is only sat fats but theuir are mono, poly and saturated fats in every cut of beef so enjoy your beef.

    Now about the inlaws do a Dr Phil on them at sometime when you are not expected to arrive for a meal. Tell them you want to continue to visit with them and share their company friendship and love BUT you feel hurt when they try to bully you by saying you are rude for following your healthy WOE and refusing food you know to be served in a manner harmful to your health. Suggest you bring some salad and other food to share with everybody for these get togethers. If they truely love you as the wife of their child then they will want to help you be healthy and will be very open to your offers. No hostess wants to poison their guests!

      Welcome Karin,

      I am a big meat eater, and the fats in the them (whether white or red meat) are fine. The only truly bad fat in any quantity are trans fats (hydrogenated). With meat, the qualitfication is amount. Eat until you are satisfied. A 24 oz cut of prime rib probably is past the satisified point, but I would not be worried about the saturated fats in it. Mercola.com (even though I don't agree with him on everything he says) does have some good information on good and bad fats.

      As for the inlaws, have you sat down with them and explained what is acceptable for you to eat and what is not? I know I had to with mine because for the most people are confused. Discuss what is acceptable, and just tell them you don't want to force this way on them. If necessary bring your meal with you, they will see you are committed to doing it and perhaps change their ways to accomodate you next time.

        Thanks for the fat info. I feel better now about eating so much beef.

        I have talked to my in-laws about the Atkins Diet. When I first went on it, about 3 years ago, they all saw how much weight I lost and then they went on it. They were not as anal about it as I was. I was VERY strict and it worked. They lost a little but not like I did. I lost 9 lbs the first week and 6 lbs the 2nd week. That year I lost a total of 50 lbs. and kept it of until 6 months ago. Like I said, at my in-laws the would only have one pot meals and that usually included noodles and or tatters..... They would always say, after I got there, "Sorry Karin but we didn't make anything you can eat. Just a little of this won't hurt you.......and so on. I am sure you have heard all that before. Like I said, they were on the diet and they know what the foods are. I just started to try and be busy when they invited us for dinner then they thought I was mad at them.
        It is spring now so I can use the excuse that I am going riding (I have mules) so I can't come to dinner. That usually works. We do go by to visit them other times. It is not like we only go to dinner, so I really don't agree with them that I am being rude.

        I wish I can get my hubby's sister back on Atkins. She weighs over 300 and when she got on it she lost almost 100 lbs but then she started doing what her parents did and started cheating here and there and has put almost all of it back on.

        My husband is on the larger size also and I try to get him on the Atkins and he refuses. He eats meat and green veggies for dinner but has chips and cookies and ice cream and anything else he desires. I am kinda on my own on this. It has worked for me and I will get that 10 lbs back off, I just need a little reminder what a strict induction is.

        When I started Atkins I hit 198 lbs. I am 5'8" and have always been about 135 lbs. I got down to 143 lbs and was very happy there. I am now back up to 155. I need to get my mind set back. I usually make up my mind to do something and I do it. That is how I quit smoking 12 years ago. I just quit. That is how I was successful at Atkins. I just did.

        Wow, I am usually not long winded. I better quit typing or this will be too long for anyone to read. LOL

          So good to know that there is another farmer out there. We raise our own meat also, and as we speak I'm brooding 80 chickens in our garage! In about 6 months, I'm going to have to invent the "NEW EGG DIET" lol!
          Anyway, I know about family diet sabotage, and I'm glad that you found this site for support. Just keep your eyes on the prize and educate your inlaws about your diet and maybe they will have a little more understanding for your way of eating. I too, am married into a family that doesn't offer much support, but they aren't supporting these extra 35 pounds, either!!!! Keep up the good work, and check in often!

            Welcome to ADBB!! I love your post, and I feel for you on the 'in-law situation', that can be tough. Its not rude to not eat food that is bad for you. If they are heavy, mabye they are just jealous of you for getting healthy, while they didn't. I look forward to reading more posts from you!

              Thank you Kent for telling me I am good on the meat. I do eat a lot of it.

              I am starting the induction stage over and sounds like I made a booboo already. There is another Forum in here called Low Carb Menus. They have a One Week Clean Induction Menu posted in there and it said that you can make and eat Flax meal crackers and also Flax meal Cereal. I posted the question in a nother Forum and they said NO WAY!!!! I sure hope someone fixes that thread and lets everyone in there know that it is not ok to do this.

                Flax is limited during Induction. According to Dr. Atkins, we should take a daily fiber supplement (wheat bran, psyllium husk or flaxseed) at 1 tablespoon a day. If you are using the fiber to relieve constipation, you can increase the amount until your constipation is solved.

                Flax is a seed, so if you want to use it in 1 ounce amounts, you should do it during OWL (and be aware that it can affect your bathroom habits!)

                So, it really depends what the recipe of the flax crackers or flax cereal are. I know that the microwave flax wafers I developed and posted in the recipe section of ADBB calls for 1 tablespoon of flaxmeal for 1 serving, in accordance with Dr. Atkins' daily fiber amounts. But I do know that folks use that recipe and similar ones as a food substitute for carby crackers or potato chips.
