  • Question about family members not on Atkins

I am wondering how healthy it is for my family members not following Atkins. My hubby, sons and daughter are all thin. They basically eat what I eat, except I do make them their potatos (sometimes) and they have their bread. (Not as much as they used to though) as well as whatever else they may be eating outside the home. But I am wondering if the extra fat that I may be adding in the meals, along with whatever they are eating outside the home, may be actually hurting them??
I remember when I started Atkins, I made bacon and eggs every morning. My DS loved it. He is like me, a breakfast person. My DH (I found out later) was telling people at work that I was trying to KILL him! LOL I gave him leftover bacon from breakfast as a BLT for his lunch.

I worry about that too Barb. My hubby loves the food I cook, but when he leaves the house he eats all his carby stuff. However, he's lost almost 20 lbs since I've been on the diet...

I've kept to lower fat ways for the other family members...they don't use butter very often, and eggs/breakfast meats are usually just a weekend thing, so it hasn't really affected my guys at all. I've adjusted more for myself and DD than the other way around.

Breakfast is usually eggs with spinach and cheese and something. Bacon or sausage or ham., or sometimes just spinach and cheese. My DS goes to school braggin about his breakfasts LOL. DH is not a breakfast person so he doesn't appreciate it, even though I am doing this by 6am!! They are eating a whole lot more veggies and salads than they used to, so I am thinking that is a good thing. But then I am adding stuff like cream cheese to cauliflower and wondering if that is good for them or not?

I have alway used butter Shelly. Hate margarine. I mean, I don't use a ton of it, but that has always been the spread of choice. Even before I knew how bad margarine was LOL.

            OK, like this.
            Dinner (mine: (example)
Maybe sirloins or stip steaks wrapped in bacon, or chicken or whatever
broccoli and carrots steamed with butter
            salad with dressing of choice
and then they (the guys) will have a baked potato with butter and sour cream and also eat almost a loaf of garlic bread!

I pretty much stick to low carb for my family, but they do have pasta or sandwiches for lunch sometimes. I don't worry about the added fat, because they are eating low carb the rest of the time. I do understand your concern though. I don't add fat to the food that they are eating most of the time. I butter the broccoli on my plate, I add cream sauce only to my spinach etc. I'm interested to hear what other have to say.

Re: Question about family members not on Atkins

My bf is of slight build and he's maintained the same weight throughout the two years I've been on the diet(118 pounds) and he eats fairly similar to me except he takes the skin off his chicken and cuts the fat off of pork chops and steak. He will have carbs when we go out to dinner and occasionally I'll buy him a potato or a bun, depending on what's for dinner.
From the outside he looks fine but I do wonder what changes the added fat has made to his system.

He's doctorphobic though and just talking about a blood tests makes him queasy.

My family eats what I eat plus bread, sometimes potatoes/rice/pasta and dessert. Lately I have been able to trick them a bit - leave potatoes out of the casserole so I can eat it, give just fruits for dessert etc. They haven't noticed much neither have I actually realised how big the changes have been... unless my brother lived with us for a week and told us how weird we eat lol. He always asked "what are you going to eat it WITH"?

Re: Question about family members not on Atkins

I don't feel that I have given my family anything to be concerned about. They still eat corn on cob, potatoes, and bread. When I fix the meal, I always ask them if they want anything besides what I am having with it. I always have a salad, meat or fish/and my veggie. If they want another veggie added or rolls...then they say so. I think they are eating healthier now than they did before I started Atkins.

Also, I don't buy the chips, cakes/cookies or other things that aren't healthy. I buy more avacados, berries, other fruits and nuts for snacks/desserts. They haven't complained. They still go to store and buy chips occassionally or order pizza. Not as often, but they are not deprived.

Re: Question about family members not on Atkins

I feed my family pretty much the same as you Barb. I don't put a ton of butter or cheese on veggies and I only add that stuff occasionally. Not b/c I think it's bad - just sometimes we like things plain. Everyone is getting more fresh veggies and way less processed food. The kids have milk and cereal and sometimes a sandwich for lunch. And fruit. I think overall everyone is eating much better than we used to and dh doesn't have stomach problems anymore since cutting out wheat products. When I go food shopping and ask if there's anything in particular they want they will usually say asparagus, or berries or something like that. Okay, sometimes they ask for ice cream, but usually they ask for something healthy.

Re: Question about family members not on Atkins

I find it encouraging that since I started this WOE, my 11-year old is eating better than he used to. He's got Asperger's Syndrom (kinda like an ADHD/OCD/ODD sandwich), which makes him an extremely selective eater.

While he gets choices at school for breakfast & lunch, where he routinely skips most of the good, nutritious stuff, and there are still poptarts, crackers and instant noodles at home, he is starting to take an interest in more veggies.

But I'm pretty bad - I still let him get a chicken nugget McD Happy Meal w/chocolate milk & cookies, then I cook for me at home later.

Re: Question about family members not on Atkins

Boonie, my daughter has Asperger's. It can be difficult, she only eats certain things. I eat my food, my family pretty much eats what they used to. A lot of times, I make two dinners! I have tried a few of Linda's Low Carb dishes that they like (Stephs Yummy Chicken Stuff is a fav). We don't eat fast food anywhere near as much as we used to, or order pizza as much. They are all thin and healthy and active, and I don't want to push my food issues off on them. I don't let them eat a whole bag of cookies like my Mom used to let me when I was a kid, but that is a different topic! LOL
What would we do without it?

Wow, sunflowergrl - sure is a small world - thought few ever even heard of Aspergers! If I could get him on Atkins, even for 1 meal a day with out changing the rest of his eating, it would probably be much better for him than his current WOE. McD on the way home is so much easier than cooking separate meals every day. I offer him what I've fixed, but to most everthink, he says "no". If I cook separately what I think he'll eat, though, he leaves carb-packed leftovers quite often which could be too much temptation for me. And I hate to waste food; and he refuses ALL leftovers.
But in the last week, I finally fould a vitamin he likes!
How old is your daughter? Have you had success with her nutrition?

I am the only Atkins follower in my household

Husband and little Jack Russell Terrier don't do low-carb.

The main dishes/entrées I prepare suit both of us - be it meatballs, ribs, Chicken Parmesan, fillets, a roasted turkey breast, fish, and so forth. However, if any extra butter or cream is added to something, it is only to my own plate, and an extra side or two is prepared for husband. I would rather not find out the repercussions of a very high-carb and high-fat menu. lol
