  • What do you eat at birthday parties?

I'm having a small belated birthday party for my brother...can never catch him on the weekend (his travelling) so it'll be in one or 2 weeks. Bringing over presents and a birthday cake for him.

When I told my hubby I wasn't going to have any of the cake, he was surprised. Is it rude not to have some of the birthday cake, because I really don't want to. I guess I could bring over my own Atkins-friendly dessert.

What do you all do when you go to a birthday party, do you BYOD (bring your own dessert, LOL )?

I am diabetic, and no one would ever expect me to eat cake not to be rude. I think that it's nice enough that you are bringing the cake - don't cave to peer pressure. If you don't want to eat something sweet, you could also bring a platter of cheeses, cold cuts, olives and pickles.

It's not rude for an alchoholic to refuse a drink, why would it be rude for you to refuse sugar when you're trying to break your personal addiction?

Most Atkineers bring their own 'survival' kits of vegetables, eggs, and cheese, but not desserts. There are plenty of Atkins-friendly cheesecake recipes on the forum, however, that you could bring with you to provide an alternative for you and his guests.

Re: What do you eat at birthday parties?

Thanks Binsk and Bombshell for your thoughts on that, I think it would be a good idea to bring some food of my own. It's really a mini-party, me hubby and my bro so they can have the cake.

By dessert, I mean one that's in tune with Atkins, like the ones listed in the recipes section...for example something with 2 ounces of softened cream cheese and splenda with a flavor added (like unsweetened cocoa or pumpkin spice).

Re: What do you eat at birthday parties?

I quite often bring along my own dessert. I'm in OWL, so I do up a 3 minute chocolate cake from here:

              and I bring half along.
One time I brought that, strawberries, and the hostess gave me some unsweetened whipping cream...oh my gosh, I was the envy of the party!

Bring whatever you can find that is appropriate to the stage of Atkins you are on.
Like the other's have said, you wouldn't force an alcoholic or a diabetic to drink or eat something bad for them and people have to understand that. If you are just starting Atkins you need to get your family and friends on your side right from the get-go.

For my own party a couple weeks ago, I brought the dessert (Linda's Raspberry Almond Crumb Cake-THANK YOU LINDA). That just made every one eat what I could eat! LOL Last night, I had a family bday dinner to attend. We had berries with cream per my request. It worked out wonderfully and everybody enjoyed the refreshing desset after such a huge dinner.

Re: What do you eat at birthday parties?

This wasn't a birthday party, but an office party where they were having bagels and danishes and stuff...which I couldn't have. So, I made a frittata and took it to the party so I could have some and figured to share too. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE ate ALL the fritatta and left the junk food on the table. In a way, i felt bad for the hosts because they bought stuff from this gourmet deli...and there it all was left over. Everyone kept going on and on about how good the fritatta was! LOL

Re: What do you eat at birthday parties?

lol Validrouge, that happens a lot! We go to lots of parties in the summer. I usually bring cheese chips and devilled eggs, sometimes sliced cucumber (for dips and spreads, etc.) Everyone always hoovers that stuff first and leaves the doritos behind. It's a good idea to eat something before you go so you aren't tempted by stuff and if you know you'll want something, (snack or dinner - depending on the type of party) then bring some friendly food you can eat. If you know there will be cake and you will be tempted then bring your own legal treat. Basically, do whatever you need to do to keep yourself on track. But I'm sure you'll find that most people will want your food anyway because it is so yummy. Have fun!

I make the Best Cheesecake Ever listed in the dessert recipe section. That's my little slice of heaven. In the summer I even add strawberries on top.

I'm sure if you explained to the hostess that you are on a strict diet and cannot eat certain foods (like the birthday cake), you won't be labelled as rude or whatever. I mean really, if you were allergic to peanuts and they had a peanut cake with peanut icing, would they really expect you to eat it?

Re: What do you eat at birthday parties?

I always take savoury dishes to functions and for dessert would make sure there was some creamy gooey ripe brie and some flax crackers for me to eat with them! Once I reached OWL 'other fruits' rung I added a few grapes to nibble on too!

If we are out and about as we were today and my DH decides he 'needs' a sticky cake and coffee I ask for a chunk of cheese or a piece of ham if they can supply that, or just sit there with a bottle of water and eat nothing!

You might be surprised how many 'naturally slim' people will sit and eat nothing when others are indulging in cakes and no-one ever accuses them of being rude or anti-social, so dont ever think you 'need' to eat anything you have decided you dont want to eat for whatever reason.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                              Excellent point!

I know naturally thin folks and when they refuse or say they aren't hungry or say they'll only take a bite, no one complains. In fact, they usually admire them for having so much control or for being health conscious. However when an overweight person refuses....oh boy, the whole world comes to a stop....they're being rude, they have must be ill because no one should refuse food, or this one "it's not good to starve yourself, dear."
