  • I learned a good lesson.

Ok, I have been doing Atkins for almost two months, so you think I would know better. I LOVE hotdogs, and I haven't been eating then because I know that they are not good for you. I figured that if I could find some that were low in carbs, I could have one and not hurt myself. I went to the grocery store and read all the carb counts and bought the kind with the lowest carbs, but dumb me didn't read the ingredients!! How could I get so sloppy!!! I had one for breakfast with some green beans, and it was so yummy (yesterday) and by lunch time my tummy was growling and I wanted to eat everything in the house. I was shocked because I never feel hunger like that, and I knew I had been drinking lots of water so it wasn't thirst. I looked at the hotdog ingredients, and the second thing was CORN SYRUP!!! I was so mad at myself, I would never had eaten that if I had only read the label FIRST!!!
I guess the moral of my long post is 'No matter how long you have been on the WOL, you can't get sloppy and not real the whole label not just the carb counts'.

Oh, the dogs were cut up for doggy treats!!!
What would we do without it?

I think I am confused. Is food not ever suppose to have sugar as a listed ingrediant on the label. If something says l gram of sugar are we not suppose to eat it?

You need to see how early in the list of ingredients sugar (or corn syrup/glucose/any other of sugar's aliases) is listed in addition to looking at the carbs info on the label.

They have to list the ingredients starting with the item with the most amount and ending with the stuff there is only a tiny bit of, so the earlier in the list the more of anything in the food.

Try to buy stuff with no ADDED sugar in the list of ingredients.
Some food like tomatoes might have sugar carbs listed amongst the fat/protein/carbs/fibre/sodium but this is not added sugar but the natural sugar in the tomato.

As for salad dressings, here is what the allowed foods list says
Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than two carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine.
Atkins certainly turns us all into label readers! I keep a pair of those folding reading glasses in my bag so I can use them to read those teeny letters on the labels when I go shopping!

Ok, so what you are saying is for instance Dill relish says l carb, l gr. sugar, as long as sugar is not listed as an ingrediant that means it is a natural sugar which would make it acceptable. Correct?

Um...you were hungry by lunch time. Normal is what I think. Granted, it's best to always look at the ingredients, but eating one hot dog and a small serving of green beans, and I'd be ravenous too. I honestly wouldn't blame it on the sugar gram. Just my two cents!

Re: I learned a good lesson.

No it wasn't just one gram of sugar, the SECOND ingredient in the hotdogs is corn syrup, which means that it has a lot in it. Trust me, I am never hungry like that. My tummy was growling, that hasn't happened to me since before I started this WOL. My whole point to this post was that we need to read the ingredients, not just the carb counts. Those hotdogs are full of sugar, even though they only have 1 carb.

I can't agree with your "they are full of sugar". Alot of products do have sugar, but if it only had one gram of carb, it wasn't "full of sugar". It had one sugar gram.
Dr Atkins does state that you can have items that have up to 2 sugar grams or less. It would be virtually impossible not to, and it makes you aware of ingredients in products. I never disputed your explanation of watching the ingredients. But I honestly wouldn't blame the one gram of sugar in a hot dog for your reaction. You didn't eat enough to keep your satiated. You are suppose to feel hunger. Otherwise we'd never eat! LOL

Re: I learned a good lesson.

I agree, they weren't 'full of sugar. Yes that was the second ingredient but htink about it..i'm sure 98% of the hot dog was meat..even though the corn syrup was the second ingredient it must have been a very small amount to be 1g of carbs. If they were 'full of sugar' the carb count would have been much higher. This rule applies to bacon as well.

Sunflower........OMG.....I did the EXACT same thing over the weekend.I picked up some chicken hot dogs, read the package.......1 carb per weiner.......awesome.......yeah until you step on the scale the next morning and your up a lb.Couldnt beleive with all my food choices,I choose to risk eating a weiner.Lesson learned for both of us
I would bet it was from the sodium in the hotdogs. had nothing to do with the carb count. It was just water weight, I almost always have this issue with any processed food, deli meats, pepperoni etc. You need to eat 3500 additional calories to gain 1 lb of fat. You wouldn't gain it from 1 sugar carb.

                        My two cents.

                          Please listen to me! LOL
I didn't gain weight, they had an affect on me, and I think it was the corn syrup. I did eat enough, and I know my own body. I was simply trying to warn people who may be new that we must read labels and pay attention to how food affects our bodies. I think having corn syrup be the second ingredient is way too much sugar, and I won't eat them again. I do eat enough to feed my hunger, and I find it hard to beleive that one hot dog and a cup of green beans would not be enough for anyone for breakfast. I was just trying to add some helpful advice, and you guys are trying to make it sound like I was starving myself. Trust me, it was the sugar.

Honey I got what you were saying and I just want to add....if you miss hotdog find a local butcher or a German market...where they are made with out sugars or starches...
I found three places locally that make them I am not a hot dog fan but I like these a lot actually...

I know that hidden sugars can trigger cravings and totally agree with you ...

when you notice sudden hunger like that it is usually not hard to find the reason ..just look your last meal!!

you are absolutly on target and doing fine I think in your analysis of this issue

the funny part for me and I am a nurse and should be able to understand this better but I do not hold water with sodium.....however ..sugar OMG I can eat sugar and be up 4-6lb overnight...and my blood pressure goes up....go figure ...salt it does not have the least impact on my weight/bp... but sugar ...all these years of training and working and teaching and for me after one year of close looking ...find sugar causes so much water retention????? go figure on that one!!!
