  • Fasting and then Atkins

Hi i will be finished with my fast in the next couple of days . I was wondering whether I should go straight into induction when I done . i read somewhere that i should go to OWL which i rather wouldnt . Also am I going to gain all the weight i have lost. Once i start eating the Atkins ?. I hope not as this is the only WOL that I am comfortable with .

What kind of fast were you on and why did you go on it?

If you lost primarily water weight with your fast, then you might gain that water weight back. This also happens to the folks who inappropriately use the Fat Fast.

Additionally, another way to look at this is like Induction. If you think about it, Induction is a type of fast: carbohydrates are severely limited for a minimum of 14 days. As you know from Boot Camp, the initial pounds lost during Induction (or any weight loss diet for that matter) is water weight. Some folks will have rapid weight loss during week 1 and lose nothing during week 2. Some folks won't lose a pound during week 1 and lost during week 2. And some people will stop losing weight during weeks 3-6--due to our bodies readjusting to the changes we've made.

Likewise, some people go off Induction and begin "eating normally" only to gain back poundage within 24 hours. This is most likely water weight.

2 late i lost 20lbs on my fast ...can that all be water weight?. I lost 11lbs at bootcamp but, didnt gain it all back . So are you saying that if i go on to the induction phase not OWL I should continue to lose weight?

Some of that weight you lost during your fast can be water and some of it could be muscle loss.

The only way you would be able to see if you truly lost fat weight was if you had your body fat analysed before your fast and after it. If there was no difference in the body fat %, then the weight you lost would be either water or muscle. Like you learned in Boot Camp, the scale doesn't tell you what kind of weight was lost (or gained).

As for going to OWL or not, you lost 11 pounds during Boot Camp. Those 11 pounds aren't the best indicator of your metabolic resistance to weight loss, but you can use it to give you an idea of what that is. So use the chart in the book to see what your degree is. Remember what Dr. Atkins wrote in the last sentence of Chapter 13: the folks who have metabolic imbalance may benefit from staying on Induction longer than 12 weeks because it gives your body the time to correct those imbalances. So look up your degree of metabolic resistance and re-read the chapter on Metabolic Resistance to see if you have any MR risk factors.

Sorry about this, I hit the reply button sooner than I should have.

Are you in ketosis? IF not, you have to go through Induction and get into ketosis. The you can move on. You might be wondering if I lost weight during my fast, that has to mean I'm in ketosis. Not necessarily. Remember when you read Chapter 6 for Boot Camp? Dr. Atkins made a distinction between lipolysis and glucosis.
