  • ketosis and fat burning?

How do you know when you are ketosis if you are burning dietary fats or stored body fats?

Or is it a bit of both?

What is the recommended limit for fat intake when in ketosis?

    thanks

You use a little of both, dietary and stored. This is why it's very important not to over-eat or over-indulge on this diet. If you overeat, you will end up metabolizing what you ate, not what's already stored.

Dr. Atkins wrote "the loss of inches is an indication of real success" and that "loss of inches is of fundamental importance, for it represents real fat loss--the emptying of your fat cells." So if you are in ketosis and are losing inches (and to a lesser degree pounds), you are most likely metabolizing your stored body fat. If you are in ketosis and aren't losing inches, you might not be metabolizing your body fat.

During the weight loss phases, your fat intake makes up about 55-65% of your total caloric intake. By the time you get to Maintenance phase, dietary fat will be 40-50%. By the way, it takes very little added fat to make your meal high fat. I cringe whenever I read menues that include multiple tablespoons of butter, mayo or oil in addition to fatty cuts of meat, 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and all 4 ounces of cheese. Read the sticky in the Induction forum to see how little added fat you need.

Oh it's very possible to overeat the added fats. I try to stick to the recommended serving size on the package. In other words, if the mayonnaise jar says 1 tablespoon is 1 serving, that's all I use. Same thing for butter or olive oil.

Like I wrote in the Induction forum sticky and in the OWL forum sticky, you don't need "alot" of added fat. 1/2 tablespoon to 1 tablespoon per meal is typically all you need. Slathering a hard boiled egg with mayonnaise is overkill because an egg is about 75% fat.
