  • Induction and the Testimonial Dinner

OK. I've got a "thing"coming up. It's a testimonial dinner type thing. Fixed menus - wine -silent auction. I've been throwing myself into induction. i want to take a run at reaching my real goal weight.

I've been at this long enough that I can handle a restaurant - but I find these types of events dietary nightmares. They aren't even "good" carbs - as in "HEY .. THAT WAS WORTH THE CARB." They're more the "WHAT THE HECK DID I EAT THAT FOR."

    Any thoughts or tips?

I say fill up on salad or..... tell people you're not feeling well and don't eat, but just fill up before you go on your own low carb fare. I know what you mean about these things. I think a lot of doing this diet is doing some serious strategizing.

Hmmm... I think I would make sure I ate well before hand. A full belly will keep temptations at bay - especially the group psychosis a tasty dessert tray can bring about. Otherwise, I would see if a salad option would be available - perhaps a nice chicken & seafood ceasar (sans croutons, of course!) - something unique and delectable that will have all the attendees at your "thing" wishing they'd ordered like you .

Good luck; let us know how it works out... S.

It's a "rubber chicken" type dinner, right? I would eat something legal beforehand. Then eat the salad, eat the chicken and ask for extra veggies instead of whatever starch they are serving. Dessert and coffee time is usually a good time to take a rest room break or go outside for a breath of fresh air before sitting through speeches. Usually dessert isn't worth it, but if you're unsure, "accidentally" spill your water or some salt on it. That usually kills any temptation. Good luck.

Or you call ahead and find out what the menu is. If the menu has some edible food, then eat that. If the menu doesn't have edible food, eat your meal before going. Avoid the wine and have fun with the auction.

I would eat a big fatty steak before I went with a great side of veggies. If you have a high fat meal it will make it much easier to avoid the temptation.

              • Ask questions. Ask what meats will be marinated, seasoned with, if anything.
              • Ask for any gravies, etc., to be on the side.
              • Ask specifically for an Atkins-safe meal, 9 times out of 10 they will accommodate your request.
              • As a last resort, eat before you go, or just eat a little something so you won't be starving if you turn out unable to eat the meal.

I did Extended Induction from 1/3 to 5/9 (2006) and lost 55 pounds, so I know I can do it again!
