  • Sometimes you're just screwed

I accidentally posted this in Atkins 14 day induction forum.

Some of you may know that I posted a question on attending a big fundraiser. Here's my story...

So I went to this testimonial dinner. I ate ahead of time (tuna & salad), had just a scotch on the rocks to drink, went to the cheese plate to gather a low carb snack. Everything good so far! But then the problem starts. Three hours later and no dinner. Just a thin salad. I ate it w/o dressing. More waiting.

Eventually, I ate a roll w/butter and picked at the fruit/mousse desert that was already on the table. When the dinner shows up, it is a glazed chicken on a potatoe cake thing.

I had no way to really bring food with me.

Ah. Not a complete disaster - but a setback.

That sucks. I had a similar thing happen to me around our office Christmas party. Long drive to get there, not enough eating beforehand, and not a danged thing I could eat when I got there other than some green stuff without dressing due to the unknown ingredient factor. That was the longest, hungriest night of the entire year last year. They certainly don't make those types of nights Atkins friendly. It can be tough if you're unprepared, or if they just take forever to be OVER so you can go home and eat.

Every day is a new day. Never base what you do tomorrow on the mistakes you make today, or you could end up living your life without ever having a good day.

all I can say is when stuff like that happens to me..and it does... even with the best planning... I just keep drinking water ...lots of water...it is always there ..hot water shrinks your stomach you know it is gaggy to drink imho but it works!

Ain't that the truth!! Thanks! It's true. It has bee a while since I've had to do induction and boy - it is tricky when you're at one of these events. I was even prepared for this one - but the extended timeframe and offerings - well, I was stuck, hungry, and a little faint. On the brightside - it wasn't a "pig out" - just "making do". On the bad side - it'll take 2 days to work it out of my system. "Ick" & painful!

OK - HERE'S THE STRANGE THING...I hopped on the scale and I've lost 3lbs since yesterday??!! Yet - I was "off diet". Not badly off diet - but just off.

I think it totally depends on your body and where it's at. Weight fluctuates seriously at times, and you might have gotten lucky and been in a great carb burning mode or on the cusp of a whooshie that just wouldn't be stopped! I think the time that I fell off it sort of happened like that, and the bad didn't catch up with me for a few days, at which time I had more problems with swelling from the saltiness which was sort of delayed in reaction. Does that make sense? LOL Combinations of foods will sometimes give strange reactions too, in my opinion. I wouldn't assume it would happen like that every time, cause you know THAT'S just too good to be true!

There are 2 things you could have done, eat just to get you thru or pigged out on everything. I would have done the second congats on doing better then I would have.

SEE!! this just proves my point all the more... I just posted about how bad I messed up over Easter.. But you can't beat yourself up about it, it's life and it's going to happen now and then to everyone at one time or another. You just have to jump back on track as soon as possible. And I wish you the best of luck on doing so. I have been gone off the board for a week because I was so ashamed of how bad I cheated but I'm back on track and my weight is lower then it was when I cheated so ALL's GOOD!

                  Thank you for your post.

As the others have said, you did the best you could with what you had!

Next time you go out to eat make sure you have a couple of sachets of dressing that you know are legal in your bag/pocket (or in the car so you can pop out and get them) to use. I also always have a few butter pats and some splenda packets 'just in case'.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

You deserve a pat on the back. You did a lot better than I would have under the same circumstances.
I've carried oil and vinegar in those little canisters that you get 35mm film in and they work pretty well. I do put them in a ziplock, just in case. That way, you won't have to settle for plain salad.

                        Re: Sometimes you're just screwed

I'd read your Easter post. Been there - done that. I've been through this before. I have Atkins to thank for being 90 lbs heavier than I used to be (4 yrs ago!). I've put 10lbs off - and I want to get to my goal weight which is 20lbs down from here - so i'm back in the saddle!!

There's an odd thing that sometimes the occasional screw up gives you renewed motivation - but I wouldn't recommend it!

                        Good for you!!!

Put some nuts in your purse or pocket (in a bag of course!). 2 oz nuts (I make up a mix of cashews, macadamias and walnuts) can really kill hunger if there is no 'legal' food for you to eat.

'Tis a good idea - but hard in a suit and tie thing to drag along anything substantial. In this case, i'd thought I had it covered but BOOM! I still feel like a bloated mess.
