  • I was wondering...

Hey guys I had a few questions and I hope they havent been answered too many times already but I did do a search and find out what I could about them.

I am 5'11" and 205 I would like to lose 20-25 lbs. I resistance weight train 3 days a week and do cardio for 30-45 mins the other 4 days. Ya I know no life
My first question then is during induction which I am doing am I not going to gain muscle mass? I am not going for worlds strongest man or anything but I would think with all the protein that muscle mass would be gainable. I read on another post here that you cant gain muscle, so just curious.

In regards to caffeine, I know it is evil and addictive but does it just create cravings or does it actually make your blood sugar higher? Cravings I can handle, thats what shaking and sweating is for haha but sabotaging my weight loss I can not handle.

Thanks so much for your insight and advice.

Can't answer the muscle one but I can handle the caffeine one.

Caffeine actually makes your body release insulin. Therefore, depending on what you ate with it, you may turn to fat the caloriues that went with the meal.

A bit of further explanation. You only store fat in your body when the process is started by the release of insulin, and normally it is only released by high GI carbohydrates. Thus, all those lovely green veggies you eat in Induction will NEVER cause the body to release insulin, so you won't store any fat (from calories) of the protein, fat and (low GI) carbs you are consuming. BUT, if you have a coffee it causes your body to release insulin, then all those calories will be 'processed' and any excess to requirements will be stored as fat.

It also narrows the blood vessels (it is a vaso-constrictor) and this isn't too good for you either!

    Hope this helps.

That is a huge help thank you for that! Why did I want to hear "Drink all you want it has no effect whatsoever on you" lol? Wow I just caught myself twisting what you said into something that suits me better lol. It went something like this, "drink it in the morning on and empty stomach or with very little food and it wont have anything to turn into fat". The demented mind of an addict I tell ya! Thanks again for replying

Jacksuncle...look for posts by iyammaschke or 2big4yoursize regarding whether you can build muscle mass on this plan. Of course, they are women and they can't add mass like a man can...but, I tell ya what....iyamamaschke sure has added some fabulous looking muscles.

We have a thread in the exercise forum where we are doing weight training 3-4 days a week and cardio on the days in between if you want to join us.

If you want anpother book which explains al this really well, here is the link and a pic http://www.gifeelgood.com/data/book_shop.htm. This book is by an Australian Dr who is also a Chinese medical practitioner. He advises on using low carb and low GI together. The book explains some of the principles (like the coffee one) in a clearer way than Atkins (for me, anyway). For instance, he says if you have a 'carb meal', wait 2 hours before eating a 'protein meal' (what we eat on Atkins). It also has some good recipes. I plan to use some of his principles when I get to maintenance.

Your body might be able to handle the caffeine... this isn't 'by the book' but I've been drinking caffeine (coffee and diet coke) pretty much since I started Atkins in Dec... I seem to tolerate it ok... maybe you will too?

Good job with all you’re working out... It's not that you don't have a life, just that you'd rather spend your time getting healthy! Keep up the good work!!

I cant quote you facts and figures here, jacksuncle but am sure that poster is WRONG!
I am sure that before long one of our more experienced scientific brains will post in that thread with the real facts and references to reassure you (and any others) that it IS possible to gain muscle by following Atkins!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Coffee does cause problems for some people. Start by limiting your coffee to 2 cups per day and see if it works ok for you! i have continued drinking 2 cups a day and am stil losing so for me its ok..i am thinking of cutting back to one cup a day eventually and see if it makes a difference..i suppose it is possible i could be losing quicker without the coffee..hard to say.
