  • Back after surgery

Just had ankle surgery (fusion) and I'm finally able to sit up a bit and type. The good news is...I didn't gain any wieght. The pain meds madee me so sick....crackers and toast were the only things that helped. The bad news is....I'm going to be on crutches another 6 weeks. I"m going to try and hobble over to the bowflex to get some arm training in and at least try to get my heart rate up. Other than that....I'm starting a clean induction today...and hoping to get some more pounds off next time I get on the scale. Just wanted to drop in and say HI.

    Hi elle

I am glad you are able to come back to ADBB again and post.

I am sure someone in the Exercise forum will beable to suggest some seated exercises for you to do if you post a question there.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

You could sit on a firm chair (dining type) and do leg lifts, front and side if you can manage them. And you can also lay face down on a firm bed (or across a table) and do reverse leg lifts and curls (in to your bottom). Sounds easy but you'll find it works a whole new set of muscles!

Do you mind if I pry for a moment? What kind of surgery did you have? The reason I ask......I have what I think may have been torn latteral ligaments at one time and i'm sure they have not healed correctly if at all. I ran a 5 mile the other day on pavement (usually on my treadmill I do ok) I couldn't walk for 2 days.
Thanks for the input and welcome back!!

          Re: Back after surgery

No problem fawn. I had a fusion (screwing together) of the Subtalar joint in my ankle. No ligaments were involved. I won't be able to move my foot in one direction. It's hard to explain without a pic....but...I can move my foot up an down..and side to side. It's walking on uneven surfaces that my foot won't be able to move and adjust. This is my 4th ( in 2.5 years) and hopefully my last surgery on this ankle.

I had a lot of pain when walking/running, especially on uneven surfaces. Now I've done triathlons so I'm not a whimp but this pain would make my knees buckle. Had two arthiscopy to remove cartilage. Then a Sinus Tarsi implant (sort of like an orthotic, but inside my foot) and now the fusion. I won't know till I get out of the boot and get to therapy if it worked or not. I'll be happy if the pain is reduced by 50%. Just so I can run again.

I can't really complain much...cause I've been active all my life and this is the first real problem I've had. One thing I would say is keep going till you get it fixed. I went thru 4 or 5 docs till I found one that was willing to try and help instead of telling me to take tylenol and stop running cause I was no "spring chicken" and such. Yeah...right.

What really stinks is I just got back into the groove...after my last surgery....and here I am going back to square one again. But hey...I've been here before.....so...it's nothing new. I'm sure that didn't help at all LOL. Good luck and don't give up.

            Re: Back after surgery

Hey Analog...thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to do that!! A few more days of keeping the foot elevated...then I'm throwing caution to the wind. I think I saw a "wheelchair" workout somewhere in the exercise forum that I'm going ot look up. Thanks all.

You know what...that's not a bad idea!! I'll get my trust Polar HRM out and see what exercises I can do to get the old ticker thumping. Interesting idea. Thanks...it will give me something to do!!
