  • atkins not working?

    UGhhh....today marked the second week of Induction and i lost Zero this week...i lost 4lbs the first week, but i am worried that was just water weight. I am following atkins by the book and exercising a lot. Is it possible that atkins just won't work for me?

    It's totally normal not to lose weight everyday/every week. Some people lose weight during the first week and not the second week. Some people don't lose weight during the first week and lose during the second week. Some people lose weight during both weeks.

    Most of us can expect to lose 5-10% of the weight we need to lose during the first 14 days. So if you have a 10 pound weight loss goal, you can expect to lose at least 1/2 to 1 pound. If you have a 100 pound weight loss goal, you can expect to lose at least 5 to 10 pounds.

    You have a goal of about 30 pounds right? Okay you lost 4 of those 30 or 13% of your weight loss goal. That's the equivalent of a person with an 100 pound goal losing 13 pounds. So Atkins is working for you.

      Sounds like you are doing great! Why not post a menu. Maybe there is some fine tuning that can be done. Your loss is great though. Give it a chance....not just two weeks. What have you got to lose? Except more wieght

        Is it possible you have TOM this week and associated water retention? If so, expect scales to drop next week.

            yes stay on it are you drinking 9 glasses of water a day try taking 400 chromium poly.. maybe ease off the cheese and how much caffine are you drinking but do stay on it you should have a change in 2 weeks measure youself also

              Make friends with your tape measure so you can see the inches of bady fat being burned off. Because of some very complicated biochem reasons the human body stuffs fat tissues with fluids when you lose weight and because water is heavier ( denser)molecularly then fat the sclae will not validate the hard work you are doing not only on Atkins but on any weight loss plan. Many folk give up at this point saying it ain't working when in fact it is. The fat molecules are bigger then the fluids molecules so you can shrink without the scale resistering any change since scales only measure the effect of gravity on your total mass. you shed a couple pounds of fat add a couple pounds of water weight and the scales say no change assuming you are eating your Atkins correctly but the body is morphing and soon your body will exceed its tolerance for the biochem interferance of the fluids and generate chemicals to rid it of the fluids and poof overnight you lost pounds. we call that a visit from whooshie fairy.


              Hang in ther move to OWL and see how much smaller you are in week 3 then day 1.

                Ok thanks everyone...I will continue to work at this. I am drinking about 100oz of water a day, working out, and no caffeinne. I am eating by the plan and eating all my veggies. I will get a tape measure this weekend and hopefully next friday I will either have scale changes or tape measure changes.

                  weird to say but to many veggies adds to your carb count I snack on hard boiled eggs make 1/4 cup less veggies at 2 meals and drop 2 servings of cheese only if no loss by next friday .

                    Actually the majority of our carbs should come from veggies. So skipping them or eating less of them isn't the best plan because they provide us with fiber, vitamins and minerals.

                      By the book perhaps you don't know about the percentages of Fat, Protein and Carb calories as figured from your total caloric intake that is recommended. If your protein is to high, your body can make carbs out of it, too! Strive for 65/30/5 is what is recommended during induction. Sign up free at www.fitday.com and play with your menu to see the ratios.

                      Here's examples of a few individual foods' ratios (F/P/C):
                      Egg........................62/34/3
                      Turkey bologna........70/28/2
                      Avocado..................89/5/6
                      Cream Cheese.........88/9/3
                      Chicken Breast........37/60/3 (with skin & breading)
                      Beef Liver................34/51/15
                      Clams.....................12/73/15
                      Pork skins................55/44/1
                      Oil & Vinegar dress...98/0/2
                      Black olives..............84/3/12
                      Sausage links...........82/16/2
                      Chicken Hot dog.......68/21/11
                      Beef Hot dog............82/16/2
                      Vienna Sausage........82/15/3

                      The ratio stays the same regardless of portion, and the veggies add mostly carbs; lean meat mostly protein. Hope this is useful. So figure your day's veggies & add the quantities of fats & proteins that make the ratio.

                        I can sympathize with you. I have been following Atkins(second time around though) for 3 months. I only lost 4 pounds during the first two week induction. I have since lost 13 lbs. That is a total of 17 for 3 months. As much as everyone else?, no, but its going. I wouldn't want to carry around a 17 lb weight all day.

                        My point is if we are a little slower at losing so what, the health benefits and the energy we get from eating this way is so worth it.

                        Its slow but its going!

                          You've gotten some really good advice on here, except NEVER sacrifice your vegetables! You need those. Without vegetables you could get "backed up" which would cause even more weight to show up on the scale. Vegetables are a necessity and are oh so yummy. Even without the vitamins, minerals, fiber that they provide, they give color and texture and taste that other foods don't have. Those colors, textures and tastes are what will keep you interested, even excited, about your eating plan.

                          Stick with it, the scale WILL move again! Definitely get the tape measure! I was exercising for six weeks and the scale only moved 12 lbs...but I lost 3 HUGE rolls of fat off my back. I'll take that any day, thank you very much!

                            I was entertaining a pity party (with TOM as a co-host) this weekend as I've been doing induction for a month, and the scales are not near where I'd hoped they'd be when I started. Even though I only cheated twice, and have been exercising like crazy. But, my mother told me that my but was about 6" less wide. So that really helped motivate me for the May 1-14 challenge. Even though going for 3 days of OWL menu extras over the weekend (and TOM) put the scales today same as last Friday, despite moving 5000 pounds of field rock and digging 300 clams, I know this diet IS WORKING. Hang in there!!
