It doesn't matter what weight loss diet you followed, once you go back to the eating habits that made you fat, you'll gain weight. There's no doubt about that. You can see it with the folks who successfully lost weight on Atkins (or any other diet) then resumed their old eating and lifestyle habits. You need to learn about yourself (mentally and physically) while you are losing the weight, so you can develop strategies to main your weight.

As for ketosis....it works, but it goes back to what Dr. Atkins wrote: everyone has their individual carb level for losing and maintaining. I think if you keep your carbs artificially low for an extended period of time, your body gets used to functioning on that level and you'll stop losing weight or have a weight loss slow down. We have alot of people on the OWL Forum who can tell you that they were on extended Induction for a long time, decided to finally move to OWL, and are now experiencing the same or better weight loss rate at higher carb levels. Only a minority of us need to keep our carbs at Induction levels to lose weight, but the rest of us can eat above 20 net carbs daily and lose.

I'll back up what Megs said. If you don't learn how to eat long term and return to the old ways of eating, you will put the weight back on. You don't have to eat Induction the rest of your life to stay thin, but what you do have to do is take all the lessons you've learned in the 4 phases and eat accordingly. You won't always or likely often be in ketosis while in maintenance, so you have to learn internal eating controls.

This way of eating is so good because if you follow it properly and progress up the OWL (ongoing weight loss) ladder you learn to introduce new foods, learn if they trigger cravings and whether or not you can tolerate them. The strategies we learn here for coping with cravings will help you keep the weight off once you lose it.
And the support here is excellent and helps you cope in times of emotional or physical stress. It is similar to going to a meeting but you can be here anytime and it doesn't cost you anything!
If you are committed to changing your lifestyle, any diet will probably work. Thjat said, I know this one does and I will never go back to eating the huge amounts of carbs (mainly bread and potatoes) that I did before.
