  • Help me explain to my family...

    Okay, for the most part my family has been really great in supporting this way of life. The only thing they are on my case about is the amount of fat I eat. Now, I know I need to eat the fat, but they (especially my mom) keep telling me to eat "healthy" and cut out the fat too! I already watch calorie intake and stay around 1000 calories per day. Then, the only carbs I have are my 3 cup veggies on extended induction. I don't know what I could eat, aside from 3 cups of veggies, in a day when I would cut the fat too! And I thought, correct me if I'm wrong, that eating the fat on Atkins did serve a purpose. I don't over eat on the fatty stuff, but I do have bacon or sausage w/ eggs and I do eat all the cheese I am allowed. (I love it and have been known to occasionally eat mor than the 4oz allowed But not too much more, I promise! ) I do have the book but if someone can help me get these people to understand, I would greatly appreciate it.

    I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

      Since carbs are restricted your body has switched over to burning fat as fuel. This is where you get your energy from. If you cut carbs AND fat, you will most likely become very weak and fall down a lot. lol Okay, maybe not, but Dr. A explains it in his book (I don't have it with me today). He explains that fat has no metabolic effect on the body (as opposed to sugar which causes insulin spikes) and that our bodies switch over to burning fat for fuel - both stored fat and the fat we eat. Does that help?

          The fat/low carbs in your diet helps you to go into ketosis which is how we burn fat on the atkins plan, and its not dangerous at all, if you try to cut out the fat and still eat your 3 cups of veges a day I am thinking that would lower your state of ketosis, because you would be eating more carbs then fat and protien,and if you try to cut out all carbs and fat to only eat protien like I have tryed you will get very weak, and really have a hard time getting through the day.the fat is not dangerous, but I do not eat a stick of butter a day, I try not to talk to much with my family about what I eat or what diet I am on, because they will always have a opinion on how I should be eating, I dont know much about what you could say to her, but give it time and dont let family get you down, and before you know it you will be thin and your family will have to question their way of eating.

            Amuse yourself with this - get them to try and explain exactly WHY they think you shout eat less fat. Ask them whether they think you are gaining weight, or if your blood test results are worse now than before you started this WOE. Ask them if they think you look less heathy or your waistline growing. Direct them to websites that explain about the fact that your body makes cholesterol, and if you like, get into a heavy discussion about HDL, LDL, trans fats, the various types of lipids and their saturations. Chances are, they eat a fair amount of high-cholesterol foods, some margarines, and many store-bought baked goods like cookies, crackers, and snack cakes which are much worse for you than your fat-burning dietary allowances, and they will shut up!
