  • Your Soy Milk of Choice?

I have tried a search on this and could not find any thread dedicated to this...

I love milk and switching to soy is a challenge but wondered if there are any favorites out there?

Do a lot of you incorporate soy milk into your plan?

To tell you the truth. I don't. Soy is very controversial from a health point of veiw and I choose not to use it more than a few times a month.

I'm far enough along on Atkins that I can incorporate a 1/2 cup of milk to my menus, but I don't. If I need milk as an ingredient, I use a mixture of heavy cream and water. I guess it's because, I'm a carb-quality miser---I try to choose the foods that have the most nutritional benefits for their carb count. Milk has only 2 vitamins and 1 mineral to offer and I can get those vitamins and minerals from other foods sources (plus I'd get fiber from those non-milk sources).

I like 8th Continent, good stuff. Silk is pretty good as well, but I prefer 8th Continent for some reason.

Make sure you check the carb counts and ingredients when you get soy milk.. sometimes they sneak in sugars! Especially in the flavored versions.

And thanks Origam, I have not even seen 8th C in my stores (I am in CA) but I have seen silk, I will keep my eye out. THanks for the reminder on carb count, some net 20 and some net 2!

They have 8th Continent in CA. That's where I'm originally from. I guess it depends on he stores though and how popular it is!

I was wondering about this too since I actually do like milk. I'll probably settle for Silk occassionally, I tried it in college and liked it pretty well. I havent even seen any other type of soy milk in my stores though.

What about Carb Countdown Milk? I love the stuff and it only has 3 carbs per CUP!! That is way less than Heavy Whipping Cream which has about 1 carb per tablespoon.

Soy is known to interfere with thyroid function. That's the main reason why the American Academy of Pediatrics says there is no medical reason to give an infant a soy-based formula because it was shown to cause hypothyroid in infants. Adults can be similarily affected. http://thyroid.about.com/cs/soyinfo/a/soy.htm

There was a study that linked soy to alzheimers disease. http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art14830.asp

And there's the implication of the estrogen-like properties of soy. In other words, if a women is producing normal amounts of estrogen, what are the effects of excessive estrogen? And what are the effects of the estrogen on men?

The soy and lowered cholesterol thing:

A review of studies about soy and cholesterol showed that soy lowered cholesterol by 3 points---so it's benefit was statistically insignificant. In fact, the cholesterol lowering drugs and good old fashioned weight loss lowered cholesterol more than soy.

                    Other soy links:
                    http://www.mercola.com/2004/apr/21/soy_health.htm
                    http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/ploy.html

Those links make a big distinction between fermented soy products and non-fermented soy products. Fermented soy products include sy sauce, tofu and tempeh. Unfermented soy products include soy milk, soybeans (like edamame), etc.
