  • Nutrition Label Question

I am having shrimp scampi, which is loaded in butter that pools at the bottom of the plate and is later discarded. It occurs to me that the nutrition labels puts it at about 330 calories but you are dumping out the highest calorie part - the butter/oil mixture.

The 330 includes all that right? I mean, wouldn't you have to eat every bit of it to get the 330?

By the way, I am still logging it in to Fitday as whatever the label reads....just curious about this!

    Re: Nutrition Label Question

I wouldn't think so Cypress. If you *really* want to get technical, you could measure all the ingredients out to see how many teaspoons/tablespoons of the butter/oil mixture in the total recipe, then divide it into how many portions you'll serve. Then measure what's left over after all is said and done....alot of work in my opinion and I'm not that picky especially since I really only count carbs and not fat/calories.

But if you wanted to, you could figure it out....

      Re: Nutrition Label Question

      Okay, let's see:

      8 large shrimp - 60 calories

      1 T. of butter - 101 calories

      1 T. of olive oil - 119 calories

After microwaving, all of the butter, oil and garlic pieces are in a pool at the bottom of the plate. I basically ate the shrimp and whatever oil/butter could cling to them...I don't exactly know but it seems unlikely that there was 2 T. of mixture clinging on there. Even if it did, it would have put the calories at 280 or so. That leaves 50 calories hiding goodness knows where.

But then again, there was alot of butter/oil in the pool on the plate...I am leaning towards believing I would have had to eat what was still pooled on the plate to get all the calories on the nutrition label.

Anyone have an opinion? Me and my useless information

        Re: Nutrition Label Question

so, just say you consumed half of the butter and oil mixture that'd be
        8 large shrimp - 60 calories

        1/2 T. of butter - 50.5 calories

        1/2 T. of olive oil - 59.5 calories

For a whopping total of 170 calories.

Yeah but the label says 330 calories so that is what I am wondering...it must be the total of calories if you consumed every little tidbit of the sauce. You know like lick the plate clean style eating. I am still logging in Fitday what the label says but I really feel like it isn't that high - I am gonna tell myself that anyway

I have to agree with you. As long as you are okay on the carbs, I wouldn't really worry about the other stuff...especially since you aren't licking the plate LOL

Did you get your veggies in too?

I'm on a veggie kick tonight. I think I've talked about veggies in every single post I've made. D'OH!

                  Re: Nutrition Label Question

Haha! Yes, I actually served the shrimp over spaghetti squash and a sauce I make with heavy cream. That is why I logged the 330 calories in fitday anyway. You KNOW the heavy cream is way high calories!

Good think this is a dish I make VERY rarely, huh?

Yummy...I'll bet that was good. George Stella has a recipe for that in one of his books. I've been meaning to give it a try. Spaghetti Squash is one of those vegetables that i like, but don't really love. I want to try it with the scampi though.

I'll preface this by saying I'm an accountant... that should explain it.

In order to be completely accurate and match your record keeping, you should DEFINITELY drink whatever's left over in the bottom of the bowl, no matter how disgusting. That way you know EXACTLY what your calorie/carb count for the day should be. In other words, "drink the fat!" (I miss "Friends").

                      Just kidding of course.
