  • measuring food (Europeans)

I have the Dutch version of DANDR and it made me wonder ...
In the US you guys measure foods in cups and we are allowed three cups veggies per day. The Dutch book allows for 300 gr veggies. But when I measure 1 cup of lettuce , that is a lot less than 100 grams.
How do the other Europeans do this? How accurate do we need to be?

Elke, It kind of works the same here in regards to the salad type veggies. If you get the nutrition figures based on weight it certainly doesn't come close to VOLUME measurements.

During induction, you are learning portion control. So, stick with measuring by volume (cups). When you move into OWL and can add more veggies on rung one, you may want to switch to weight....you'll get more, especially the lettuces.

The weight amounts given in European-published editions are an error.
Someone converted cups to ounces and then to grams without realising that one cup = 8 FLUID ounces, not weight ones!!
So really we ought to count one cup as 237 mls by filling a measuring jug up to the 237 millilitres mark then weigh that amount of food to know how much it is in grams.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

we have a website that will give you the foods in cups and grams tohelp you know how much to have http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ enter a food in the search and then when the list of that food appears select the exact type you want and you can put in your grams or you can do cups and it will tell you how many grams one cup or 1/2 cup or any part of a cup you want to do.
