  • When do I get my official Atkins attitude?

I started on these boards a day after Induction and was initially greeted, praised and supported by other users. It was wonderful and the empathy was very reassuring. Now that I've posted a few things other than weight loss accomplishments and "I'm new!" posts, I've noticed a very common trend here; attitude and condescension.

I'm sure this is partially my fault, as I've openly indicated that I intend to use the diet to meet goal and than move onto a very active lifestyle and more varied diet than what Atkins stipulates(because I guess that's sacreligious here). But even asking some basic questions seem to be overlooked in favor of focusing on some other part of the post and responding to what is essentially an entirely different topic. For example:

Me: "How will eating a higher protein to fat ratio affect my induction?'

Answer: "Why in the world are you eating that way? You're not on Atkins!"

Was this helpful? No. And I understand that many people here use the Atkins diet as a "way of life"--and yes, it is by definition a "diet"--but please, I implore you when the urge strikes to refrain from the "Read the book!"(I already have) and "If you don't do it for life, you're going to gain all the weight back!" mantras that I often see used to address new member inquiries and ideas about deviating from the standard Atkins formula.

I can't quote entire sections from the book verbatum and I have a plan that doesn't include a lifelone Atkins commitment. But, as of right now, I am following the diet and trying to extend my education. And, while some questions may seem very ignorant to those who have practiced this eating lifestyle for many years, replying to new users in a condescending manner and instructing them to go back to the book like some misbehaved child can be make people feel very uncomfortable and very small.

If you're one of these people, please stop and try to remember what it was like when you first started. I can't imagine that it's gratifying to downtalk someone on a weight loss forum.

well if you are refering to my answer, if you are not doing what the book says, basically you are not following Atkins, I am sorry to be blunt, but that is a fact.
I hope that you achieve your goal and I hope that with time you understand that Atkins is a very good WOE and WOL , but in the mean time welcome and I do apologize for my rudeness.

I believe you are referring to Bella Carol's responses to you in this thread:
      http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=30063
why are you eating in such way that you get this ratio?
well you can eat chicken and fish and still be getting your fat/protein ratio, because chicken and fish still have fat. You can use Olive Oil and mayo to complement your fat intake; now if you are not doing what DANDR says, you are just not doing Atkins
I dont know if it is normal, I guess a moderator will be here shortly, however as i told you as far as I know the fat / protein ratio is very important. I hope somebody can offer you a better answer than mine
Or to my response in the same thread:
Excessive protein is converted to glucose by your body. Whatever you don't use immediately for energy needs is stored as fat. So, yes, eating excess protein is damaging to your weight loss efforts. If you're not eating your veggies, you aren't doing yourself any favors either.

Also, it's not the protein to carb ratio that gets you into ketosis. According to Dr. Atkins, it's the fat to carb ratio.
I don't see anywhere where you were told
Answer: "Why in the world are you eating that way? You're not on Atkins!"
So I'm a bit confused about the origin of your greivance.

Re: When do I get my official Atkins attitude?

As far as I am concerned, there is never a need to apologize for speaking the truth.

There are many, many people out there who have used Atkins as a quick-fix and had success initially. But follow them down the road after they abandon Atkins and you will see that in nearly EVERY case, they gain all the weight back and more.

If that's your goal, then go ahead with your plan.

N0Matter: Listen, ultimately the choices are yours to make. If any of us offended you, particularly me, then I apologize. However, this is a board where we all express our opinions - sometimes we agree, sometimes we don't. Being part of this community means understanding that many of us are insistent about following the book verbatim, some of us aren't. It's all okay.

Ultimately, it sounds like you want to be a place where you are eating healthy (like the rungs of OWL) and exercising diligently (also advocated strongly by Dr. Atkins). So, whether you call it Atkins, a diet, or a way of life/eating, it sounds like a plan. Go forth and conquer! We all want you to be healthy and happy.

Re: When do I get my official Atkins attitude?

Sorry, I probably shouldn't have posted this. I had a horrible morning and was all bent out of shape from the reply to my earlier post and the feeling of being attacked that I received from my post about deviating from the diet last week. So I apologize for being presumptuous and making such blanket statements. I'm sure that everyone here has great intentions, whatever their advice.

Re: When do I get my official Atkins attitude?

Please try to remember, this IS an Atkins board! It always surprises me that people get mad when we talk about Atkins here, even though it is called 'Atkins Diet Bulletin Board'. I can't imagine going to a low fat board, and getting mad at them for not wanting to do low carb.
What would we do without it?

              Mini-goal- 149 by June 1st. I can do it!!!

Started this WOL on Feb. 13, 2006.

Re: When do I get my official Atkins attitude?

Please expect people on Atkins board to be die hard atkins fans who believe it's the one and only way to live. Think of it if they just weren't die hard. Would anyone stick to it if they were pretty sure it would work, or maybe it would work? Probably not. Staying die hard is what keeps them on this WOL! And therefore they stick to getting to, or staying at goal!
But again, NO ONE here got too large because they ate that baked potato on the side. NO one got big because they had spagetti for dinner once and a while. My grandmother's only comment when I went on Atkins was "We ate potatoes every day at every meal for years and never got fat." (She lived in germany in WWII) She's right! We lost control. Portion sizes, overindulgence in carbs, lack of physical activity, too much junk food, processed food, and pop. People on atkins are not the only people who lose weight and lose it forever. I know several people who have done weight watchers and kept the weight off for years. (so far) I know people who decided to eat mostly fruits and veggies and lost weight. I know people who barely changed their diet, but started to exercise religously and lost their weight. People who follow the food pyramid lose weight too! And they can keep it off! Heck, you could go to maintainence on Atkins from the get go and probably lose weight. It may be slower than you like, but I'm sure you didn't gain weight from eating like that with exercise, right? It's whatever works best FOR YOU! Atkins helps me because I need a written plan of do's and don'ts in order for me to stick to it. I live within strict guidelines. It helps me stay focused. I bet a lot of people on Atkins need that. Some people would be better served just watching what they eat. When I do that, I tend to go crazy and overindulge or cheat.
Regardless if you plan to stay on Atikins forever or just for now, I am here to support you. Maybe if you get that support you need in the begining, you will change your mind and see that Atkins is good for you forever. Maybe not! But I do agree that it is wrong to not support someone with encouragement no matter what. What about people who "fall off the wagon" after reaching goal? Apparently they didn't "buy into" Atkins for life forever either. But we don't sit there and tell them how dare they not follow the book before. We say welcome back! They made a mistake and felt they could keep the weight off living like that, and ended up not being able to. So what? You certainly will not win people to do this WOL forever by being nasty about the fact they have to follow the book. Everyone needs to know the Atkins board follows atkins, but even you guys don't follow everything to a t b/c I know the book says atkins bars, shakes ect are okay and you guys disagree. So if someone diagrees on how to maintain the weight, who are you to tell them they are wrong? "the good Dr." said it and you have decided that is not what's best for you. Others can do the same. The advice of following aktins forever for best results is correct, and I do not deny that. But I'm sure it could be said in a nicer way. Good luck with your weight loss! I'm sure if you follow atkins you will see what a great WOL it is and by the end you will probably be happy to stay on at the maintainence phase, with is incredibly similar to your game plan!

Re: When do I get my official Atkins attitude?

Read this thread if you haven't:

People are tough here because a) its an Atkins board and b) Atkins is less resilient to deviations from the program compared to other diets.

It's not like most low calorie diets that you can just go and exercise off the extra calories you might have eaten. You can't go and exercise excess carbs, cheats, or foods that might stall you. Atkins is much more sensitive to *what* you are eating, as anyone who has done it long term can tell you.

A cheat of one meal or food can kick you out of ketosis and thus stall your weight loss, and then people come complaining that Atkins doesn't work, they've stalled, they have cravings and that is it bad for you, when they are not doing it right.

I've learned all these things myself through trial and error, and thanks to the advice of many here, I've made changes in my life and diet to make it work. No other diet has ever worked for me. So hopefully, I am doing things right.

Hope we haven't scared you away. People are good and supportive here, even when the message isn't always what someone wants to hear.
