  • Wine after Induction...

When will it be ok to implement a small glass of port after my Induction phase? I'm not even talking a 3.5 ounce glass, as ports tend to be rather strong and fairly sufficient at half that serving size. I just know that my body is likely going to latch right onto the alcohol having been deprived of it for the past two weeks and that it might have an adverse reaction.

If you are making the path right into OWL, you can add wine shortly after induction. Normally wine/alcohol rung is rung #5. The order of the rungs are kind of best practices what has worked for Dr. A's patients and is generally laid out in order of least to most troubling foods. You can skip rungs if you would like, so bear that in mind when you make your decision.

On to port wine (according to http://www.weightlossforall.com/carb...tes-wine.htm):
4oz of Port wine contains 13.8g of carbs, so following the Rule of 5 for OWL, you could add approximately 1.5 oz of port wine to your daily diet. It would not be my preference on how to add more carbs into my diet with the options of additional veggies, but it is your choice.

Good site. Figures that I'd have to love the one with the most carbs, eh? :P

And as your body will use the alcohol as a preferred fuel you will probably see a suspension of weightloss for a while if you choose to drink it!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I would try and give up alcohol as long as you could as I find it has a negative effect on weight loss. If I drank on a Saturday night, I would be good for the next week, gymming for 5 nights and still on Induction and my weight would stay the same!

Well, I wasn't exactly planning on a weekend bender, just a glass of wine once or twice/week with meals. But I've read and learned that each individual is going to react to this differently so I'll just have to experiment.

Interestingly enough, most hard alcohol is carb-free and wines are on the very low end in this respect. And while you're consuming empty calories at upwards of 100/glass, it's not a suicidal amount. I'll probably put it off for a few more weeks. But I know there's a reason that an entire rung is dedicated to wine and spirits and I intend to explore it. :P

EDIT: Please note that this is an inquiry about POST-INDUCTION alcohol consumption. Perhaps I'm mistaken but people seem to be addressing this question as if I were starting during Induction rather than after.

Drink at your own risk. Alot of folk lose their inhibitions when they drink (even a glass or two) and end up eating foods they would normally avoid. Personally, I didn't endulge until maintenance, but its whatever you want more; to burn the fat or burn the alcohol.

Speaking for my own response - I was responding to post-induction use of alcohol - and you seemed to be wanting to add alcohol immediately after induction, rather than at the suggested time period of getting to the alcohol rung of OWL - which is the fifth rung! If I misunderstood that and you were intending to wait till you had reached that stage in your Atkins journey I apologise

So once you have negotiated the other 4 rungs (which should take at least 8 weeks if you are following the laid-down suggestions of a minimum 2 weeks on each rung) there is nothing wrong with seeing how your chosen drinks affect you and your weightloss!

It may well be that you will be happy to accept a probable slowdown in losing weight in exchange for the pleasure of your occasional glass of port, but like Betty I decided not to risk that till I was at goal - we all have different priorities ad make our own decisions based on them.

Other members merely mentioned their own thoughts on delaying potential weightloss and how people's food choices can alter after alcohol intake.

I think some of us remember the member who posted a while back about waking up surrounded by empty Doritos packets and a hangover after having decided to have 'just one drink' to celebrate an event!

I know you are not intending to go on a pubcrawl but just enjoy one glass after a meal, but in case any of our members are reading this thread to find out if it would be OK to 'indulge' more liberally I just want to mention the following.

One thing for our female members (particularly the younger ones) to bear in mind is that other members have discovered that a few drinks after being on Induction for a while can have a greater effect than when drinking before Atkins, which (while meaning they get the effects for less cost) could put them in a vulnerable position if they are not amongst friends who care about seeing them home safely!

lol, no no, my intention was to indulge in the occassional glass of wine(maybe twice/week) and, after reading up on the carb/calorie content in port, I'm thinking a nice red might be a better choice. I should actually be on rung 3 by the time I want to enjoy my first glass, so I won't be jumping the gun TOO much. Whatever I decide, I'll be sure to share with the class.

If you dont mind.... Porto is NOT the best drink because it is very sweet. I love Port but just recently added it back into my Weekend relaxations

There are many choices and they are so much better ones.... I would definately start with "white wines" especially Chardonnay types or any table white wine (the drier the better, less sugar). Red wine is the next best choice.
