  • Road Trip - help me stick to it

A week from this friday, I'm going to a concert with some friends. It's 5 hours out, 6 or so hours there, and 5 hours back. Naturally I'm looking for some way to keep up Atkins for that day.

    I won't have access to a cooler.
Anything I bring should be able to be eaten in the car. Though I'll have a chance to eat when we arrive, if i packed something that wouldn't work while in the car.
I can't rely on stopping at a fast food joint where I can simply peel off a bun or order a salad. This may happen, and might be an option, but I'd rather not base my day around it and have it blow up in my face.

I'm currently on OWL, Seeds and Nuts. But I'm seriously drawing blanks on what I can take with to eat for an entire day.

Bring a small serving of nuts/seeds. Maybe make a flax muffin with some butter on it and wrap it in plastic wrap. Definitely a huge bottle of water, bathroom stops be darned, lol. A chicken salad type situation, minus mayo for spoilage reasons put into a disposable bowl?

On most of my trips, I lived on a stash of nuts and beef sticks/summer sausage slices. They keep forever, and will last in a hot car. Each person can find their happy medium, but don't let a thing like a road trip derail your hard work.

Nuts are the go. They really fill you up. And some type of salad meal for the first stop - even in a hot situation it will be Ok for a couple of hours at least. Pack it in a ziplock bag to save space (if you keep some air in with it the lettuce tyoe stuff won't go limp) and you can use the bag for rubbish afterwards.

Here in OZ you can get cheesesticks which are OK out of the fridge. Maybe something like this string cheese I see lots of people mentioning - does it keep OK unrefrigerated. And Kent's meat stick/slices is a good one, these meats are already prserved and will keep for a while.

On my recent trip to collect my car I had nuts on the plane and on the drive home went to a fast food and they just put some roast beef slices, minus the bun, into a container for me for lunch. It was delicious!

        And water!

Is there room for a small insulated lunch bag? If so, you can bring things like hard boiled eggs, veggies, etc.

You might want to check the sticky thread in the 14 Day Induction forum called "Induction Recipe Basics". There's a recipe for Atkins Revolution Rolls. These are great for sandwich bread and they hold up well too (even with semi-wet fillings like egg salad or tuna salad). You can make a batch or two and make sandwiches.

If you want to bring something like dip, put it into a freezer-safe container and freeze it. By the time you want to eat, it will be defrosted.

And while you're freezing the dip, put a couple of bottles of water in the freezer too. This will help to keep your food cool.

Your hard boiled eggs will keep okay without refrigeration if the shells are intact. I would not let them get hot, however.

Make your travel buddies stop at a grocery store and pick up some cheese and a bag of mini-carrots about halfway through. That has been a nice treat for me on long trips and you need a walking-around break anyway, don't you? Plus, you need to remember your fiber. Although flax muffins should do the trick.

And how about those little serving-size cans of tuna or chicken with the pull-tops?
