  • how many carbs do you all eat?

    i normaly eat nothing up until dinner time, and i usually have some carefully prepared beef seared to perfection (i am a really picky eater ) with some sauted onions and garlic, green/red bull peppers,grilled broccoli,brussel sprouts-or whatever meat i decide on - fatty lamb chops/roast,pork chops/roast,ribs,chicken thighs ,wings,buffalo steaks.I usually have some kind of raw veggie to accompany it- maybe a handfull or so ,and hout later i sip on some hot water to help it all digest through the night .Basicly meat/fat and veggies a variation of the Paleo/raw diet.

    it all seems to be working great and i am feeling excellent,as opposed to when i would eat a large salad,or only veggies and soup or eggs.I tried the whole veggie thing and it really wasn't for me.i was never more constipated in my life for a long time! just curious of how much carbs everyone eats in general, i float around 20-30 grams a day ..maybe even less, but i eat alot of fats and meats to fill me up.i also use butter instead of margerine or anything else.

    I follow Dr. Atkins book have you read it? It calls for us to to eat 20 grams of carbs or less in the Induction phase. HE says we never go mre then a few hours with out eating. At least 3 meals a day and snacks.
    You might want to try it the folks on this board have lost 1000's of pounds following his plan and never feeling hungry.

      That is not a healthy way to eat (in my opinion). You need to eat all day, small meals or at least a snack. If you follow the book, you will have 100% better chance to keep the weight off long term, not to mention your health.
      What would we do without it?

        i have been following the warrior diet regimine for the past 3-4 years while also intergrating all that i have learned from other diets- thus perfecting my own diet to follow,low carbs,high protein/natural animal fats,raw/quickly grilled veggies and water.Eliminating sugars and all processed anything.i may also intergrate some raw meat meals into my diet once a week or so (Primal diet).

        i really enjoy the Atkins point of view about low/no carbs and high protein/fats part of the diet,but i also really enjoy other aspects of other diets as well..i get the best out of all of them.
        i am in really good shape with about 6-8% bodyfat,@ 5'6 145-150lbs. Solid.

          To answer your question I am still eating about 20-40g/day. I don't miss the other stuff, but on the other hand, I do practice at least eating 2.5 (lunch being a light meal) meals per day.

          I can certainly respect that you have seen benefits on your diet. Atkins isn't the only one on the block, and certainly isn't the only one that works. It is however the one advocated by this board, and the one likely that most posts are centered upon. To be otherwise, it might confuse the people just starting. We do have a general low carb site (http://www.lowcarbbulletinboard.com/diet/) that perhaps appeals to broader audience. Either way, I wish you the best.

            Hi! You need a lot of faith that the diet actually works. Eating every 3 or 4 hours and keeping my carbs down to 20 grm I lost over 100 lbs. (I've put 15 lbs back after 4 yrs and am dropping it again now).

            Keep your count; eat frequently; and ride your weight downward!!

              I am eating between 80-100g carbohydrate a day and about 1800-2000 calories.

              The carbs come from vegitables and fruit, yogurt, dark chocolate (70%) and some rye bread.

              I eat no processed foods, no simple carbs, and no sugar alcohols. I drink no alcohol.

              I cycle a lot now - 20 miles a day or more - and my weight is still falling, but VERY slowly although my shape is changing.

              I would have thought I should be loosing faster as my activity level suggest a deficit of 1000 Kcals per day or more. But there you go - it's still working for me.

                Hi Laburum!
                Maybe it's because you're gaining muscle? Or you may not be as stringent at counting your carbs now you're so far down the line? The fruit, chocs, yoghurt and rye bread are all Lifetime maintenance carbs (I think), if your weight is stalling a bit more than you'd like, maybe take it back a step or so. Lifetime maintenance is just that - maintaining weight, not losing. At least it's not going up!

                  I'm in the On-Going Weight Loss phase of Atkins. I eat about 50 net carbs daily (total carbs is higher...around 70). The majority of my carbs is from vegetables, fruits, some whole grains, and legumes. Like Labarum, I don't eat processed foods and sugar alcohols. I limit my artificial sweeteners to 1 serving once a week.

                    It would be interesting to pursue this survey in more detail. There could be a lot of variation.

                    Not2late is tiny - a foot shorter than me and of the fairer sex. She eats nearly half the carbs I do, is at a similar stage in the progamme and is loosing a little.

                    Higgies is, like me - a robust male who puts in about the same ammount of excercise, is a little shorter than I am, but seems to need to eat half the carbs to maintain the same weight as me.

                    Kent is an inch taller than I and a few pounds heavier - he maintains that at a carb level about half way between Higgies and I.

                    I am guessing that among the petite ladies Not2late and Ttdriver are at about the same level.

                    As I said, a fuller survey might turn up some interesting results.

                      No, these are actually OWL Carbs yogurt (dairy rung) fruit (berries rung, or 'other' fruit rung) rye bread (grains rung) the chocolate would be the only maintenace food as an occaisional treat.

                      Please keep in mind there is far more to Atkins than just Induction. And OWL stands for Ongoing Weight Loss -- Ongoing being the key word here.

                        Just one brief note, I eat my levels not to maintain but due to taste and appetite reasons. When you hit maintenance, I think you eventually find your happy medium or what you desire. I don't stress on the carb level anymore as most of the decision on what to eat comes naturally. Cake, and other higher carb things are off the board. There is nothing wrong with eating an orange or rye bread, but they are just not what I am hungry for.

                          I purposefully lose slow by eating as close to my CCLL as possible---I learned that I have alot of very bad eating and lifestyle habits and that in order for me not to regain once I reach my goal, I need to make sure I have replaced them with better habits. I know if I lost weight faster, I would be re-starting Atkins every 3 months to lose the weight I regained.

                          Knowing oneself is half the battle and at times the hardest part.

                            I lose weight on 60 (net) carbs/day, but I often only eat up to 15, 20, or 30 (net) carbs/day, simply because I don't like to force myself to eat more carbs if I'm satisfied with the food I'm eating.

                            I don't know where my carb equilibrium is because I haven't tried anything higher than 60. I lose the same way on 15 (net) carbs/day as I do on 60 (net) carbs/day--I'm also a bit of a slow loser; my body fat % has come leaps and bounds though as I really do throw myself into my workouts.

                            OP, Your Way of Eating and this thread in general are very interesting.
                            No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

                              I agree, Kent. I look at other people's plates sometimes and think "Why do you eat that disgusting stuff."

                              A few days ago I cut a tiny slice of my wifes chocolate birthday cake - I spit it straight out - I found it utterly disgusting.
