Acid Reflux: please help!

I'm on some meds for a staph infection and they are giving me the most HORRIBLE HORRIBLE acid reflux. The doc gave me enough samples of protonix to get me through the week on the antibiotic, but it hasn't kicked in yet... he said it might take 24 hours to start working....

What can I do in the meantime? I feel like I'm gonna puke up my esophagus!

I've *never* had acid reflux before and now I feel horrible for people that suffer from this longterm!!

This is going to sound very contradictory and gross but it really works for some people. Take about a tablespoon of vinegar and put it in a small glass of water and drink it. Your only other choices are things like tums or rolaids but I think they all have sugar and other non atkins friendly ingredients, and besides they only work for about 5 minutes and then you'll need another one!

I found that the first time I did Atkins, I got terrible Acid Reflux. The second time I tried, it got rid of my Acid Reflux!!

But go get some Heartburn medicine. Gaviscon or Rennie should do the trick and it shouldn't interfere with existing medication. Try to go for the liquid's rather than the chews or pills as I find they work better.

ugh I feel for you. Atkins has killed my reflux for themost part. Only when I eat too much do I have a problem with it now or eat something that doesnt agree with me.

For immediate relief, that heavy cream that Dr A allows us should help you out. I hope it goes away soon for you!!!

The vinegar does work, although the first time I did it i just took it like a shooter. It took my breath away, lol. i used to get horrible reflux (amazing what no flour does for my reflux ). Alot of water helps also. Make sure you aren't laying down right after you take your meds. Staying vertical will help keep the acid down.

thanks. the vinegar helped for awhile. I'm such a baby... I think I'd seriously have to rip out my esophagus with my bare hands if I had GERD or something!

I didn't know about the vinegar thing.


I have reflux and that's the OTHER reason I carry a bottle of water with me wherever I go. To wash down the acid. I suppose I should get meds for it or try the vinegar. But isn't THAT ACID??

The reason i think it works in some cases is that sometimes acid reflux and gerd are caused by not having enough acid in your stomach in stead of too much. That's why the antacids make it worse for some people. i could never take them.
