  • Induction Phase

I'm on day 3 and I really hope I'm not screwing this up.

Here's what I've been eating for example

    Today

    Breakfast:
3 eggs, scrambled with Sausage, cheese, and onion.

    Lunch:
2 grilled hamburgers with Chedar cheese, and a hand full of pork rinds.

    Dinner:
5 slices of spam (half the can), Salad (2 cups lettus, about an OZ of shredded cheese, 2 tbsp of ranch dressing) 2 slices of Chedar cheese and a hand full of pork rinds.

I also had a Can of Diet 7up with each meal

It was right at about 15 Carbs for the day according to the lables.

    Is anything I'm eating wrong?

I'm pretty sure you want to watch your soda intake. I think almost every one here limits it to like a can a day if that...I’m not sure, so don't quote me. i was drinking that flavored water that was carbonated and they set me straight. Turns out that you are only allowed 3 servings/one packet each of artificial sweeteners. So if there are two servings per can, then you've exceeded your allotment. I think there is only one per can of soda though, but they still count as one carb each. Also, check the sugar content on your dressing that can slow weight loss you typically want the ones with no sugar. The great people on this site also got me drinking lots of water. You MUST have at least 64 oz outside of what ever else your drinking and 8oz more for every 25lbs you want to lose. Plus, there is an induction forum for these questions, but I won't tell if you don't.

      Re: Induction Phase

I'd ditch the spam, the diet soda and the pork rinds. Eat more vegetables.

Try a stir fry for dinner, use some onion, and green veges like string beans, snow peas, broccoli, zucchini, caluliflower, with a nice big chunk pof beef or chicken.

Tomorrow I'll post some of my induction menus (need to find my book, it's at home and I'm at work).

I would also check the ingredients on the sausages and hamburgers. Alot of supermarket ones have bread fillers and additives and preservatives. You can make ur own burgers (the Atkins cook book has some great receipes)

Drink at least 2 litres of water a day. Cut out the soda altogether.

Add some veggies to ur lunch, u are allowed 3 cups of salad/veggies per day

Are you getting any exercise in? I would reccommend at least 3 hours a week.

Most of your carbs should be coming from veggies, and not just salad either. Also remember that you need to calculate net carbs (total carb - dietary fiber). Broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, green beans, asparagus make some great veggies for Induction, but check out the Approved Foods list for some ideas.

Ditch the soda, it likely has aspartame in it (an Atkins no-no). Drink water instead.

You have the right idea, just need a few tweaks and to eat veggies instead of pork rinds. Remember that pork rinds also have alot of sodium in them and this can cause some people issues. They are an okay snack occasionally. Snack on veggies or deli meat instead.

I'm not definite on the nutritional value or contents of Spam, but it's likely full of additives and who knows what. Try to get real (unprocessed) meat.

Good luck, you are on your way!

Well, the diet 7up has no aspartame in it, which is why I chose it, but I can always cut back on it. I also drink water, but sometimes I put Watersations in it. It also has no Aspartame.

What are some good foods that are quick to fix, by that I mean microwaveable. I had been eating sausage links, but I guess too much of that is bad. My problem is, I work in a Prison, so for 12 hours a day I'm kinda stuck there.

U could make a salad and take it to work with you? that wont require microwaving and you'll be getting ur good carbs from ur veggie allowance

                Re: Induction Phase

Try making some stews/casseroles at the weekend and take a portion to work to microwave.
Have a look at this low carb recipe site http://users3.ev1.net/~fontlady/main_dish_recipes.html and there are recipes on this board too.
You could make double portion of stir fry at dinner and take that and a cooked chicken breast or steak and heat it in the microwave. Making lunch your main meal can actually be a good dieting strategy as you are active after it and work it off better. Then when you go home just have light dinner.
Salads are really nice for lunch too, I ususally have one with meat, chicken or a can of salmon.
Just avoid the processed meats like sausages and deli meats if you can, fresh is best.

                  Re: Induction Phase

Since salads would be easier for you to take to work with you, make up a big batch and take portions with you each day.

The way to make your salads give you more bang for your buck(so to speak) you want to get the most nutrient and fiber dense and FLAVORFUL dense ones you can.

this is what I like: Spring Mix salad or Spinach salad--i especially love the fresh baby spinach that comes in the bag.

Mix up a cup of the following veggies to add to it
                  mushrooms
                  cherry tomatoes or roma tomatoes
sliced red or yellow or orange sweet bell peppers
                  fresh broccoli or cauliflower
                  snow peas
                  cucumber
                  radishes

Get a full fat ranch dressing or blue cheese (I like the Marie's dressings in the refrigerator section of the grocery store) and have 1 or 2 tablespoons of that (2 tbsp is a serving)

I also like to add shredded cheese--either sharp cheddar or crumbled feta if I can get it.

You could also add a few olives--black or green

Add chicken, beef, pork chunks to it too, or have the meat separate. I feel more satisfied with something HOT in my stomach rather than all cold. So, precook your meat and heat it in the microwave.

Then, for dinner I always have a cup of some sort of hot vegetable--broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, green beans, squash, cabbage, brussel sprouts. I always start the pan with bacon and sautee my veggies in the grease and cut up bacon...mmm mmm mmm.

The point is you'll want to spread those veggies out over the day. You'll get the vitamins and fiber your body needs.

As for the pork rinds, I ate them on induction with no problem. You just don't want to over do it because of the salt content. I used them to eat like I would crackers--use them to eat tuna or chicken salad. That helps with the portion control.

Start drinking the water...you'll find in a couple days that the more water you drink, the more you'll want. Diet sodas at this point are just way tooooooo sweet for me. I drink my water at room temperature--no ice. If it's too cold, it just won't go down as easily. Not all people are like that, but my point is, find what works for you, and do it.

This way of eating WORKS! In a few days, you are going to feel FANTASTIC and your body will appreciate the good things you are doing for it!

                  Good luck!
