    Hey, I just read this thread and now I'm completely freaked out! According to the calculations above, I should be eating about 55-56 grams of protein for my weight. I'm eating triple that! Should I be worried? My calories hover in the 1800-2200 range and my percentages are pretty close to on target. Hmmmm, what do you wonderful ladies think?

      Stacy are you losing weight (pounds and/or inches)? Is your appetite in control? If so, then I wouldn't worry too much about your current menu. kjspea has a problem with being consistently hungry, in spite of being in ketosis and having "good" percentages. Whenever you run into a problem when you are doing everything correctly, you need review what you are doing and need to figure out if there are any places you need to tweak.

      The protein daily intake for healthy adults is 0.6 grams per kilogram body weight. Could you eat more and be "okay"? Sure, you could depending on your metabolism. But some people might need to regulate themselves a bit more than others.

        yep the USDA 10% protein is nutritionally correct for minimum body needs which Not2lates forumla figures out. But dispite all the studies trying to prove eating more then that amount of protein is harmful for us unless you are a diabetic or have kidney damage eating more protein then your body neds for growth and cellular repair will not cause you any harm.

        Some Atkineers as we all read about in chapter 20 need even higher fat lower protein to make their Atkins run well because of their metabolism and that is what this topic is about a specific Atkineer needing some tweaking.

          Thanks, ladies! I was a little worried. I'm eating about 150 grams of protein and am losing (although I just went through a stall). I'm going to watch it though, just in case!

            did you know Dr Atkins actually had links to med tests showing 30% was okay for body builders and actually a point at which the human body would get a dieuretic effect on his lod site before he died?

              Just a bit more about the current DI for protein. It's based on studies done by Chittendon in the late 1900s. Chittendon wanted to see how little protein the human body needed. So he used Army recruits (young men) as his test subjects, gave them specific amounts of protein and let them do their usual Army recruit things. He found that they could have as little as 1.0 grams per kilogram body weight without their bodies breaking down.

              So, as 2Big pointed out the current DI is a minimum amount. But eating over that amount is possible as long as it doesn't affect us negatively.

                  Aren't they great? THanks ladies for all your help.

                  Increased fat has helped somewhat, thanks for the suggestions. I am down to 2600-2700 calories a day. It seems to be the amount that satisfies me with the min amount of hunger pangs and at this point, I am losing weight with that amount. And now that I am trying to get some exercise in it helps!
