  • Your Experience wit L-Glutamine or L-Phenylalanine?

So I have been trying to tame the hunger beast, following induction rules strictly and have now been testing out L-Glutamine & L-Phenylalanine.

The Glutamine made me feel increased hunger.
Dr. A recommends it to suppress sugar cravings, and it increased my cravings & hunger!!

THe Phenylalanine made me feel depressed & down!!!
ALthough Dr. A recommends this for "hunger not assuaged by being in lipolysis", I did not feel a difference w/ my hunger, just a bit of depression!
When I researched this a little more, it says this supplement is supposed to *help* elevate the mood.

Why are the supplements doing exactly the opposite with me??? Anyone have an idea or have any experience with these?

Re: Your Experience wit L-Glutamine or L-Phenylalanine?

    I take both everyday.
I notice the glutamine supresses my appetite if I take it with out food... if I take it with food I don't notice any differance at all. I don't think it helps with my sugar cravings though, if anything they've gotten worse since I started taking the vitamins.
I haven't noticed anything at all w/ the L-Phenylalanine... nothing at all.
I also take L-Carintine (or whatever it is) and though I've noticed an increase of energy if I take it about 20-30 minutes before my work out, I'd say it makes me puffy and makes my cravings worse.
Overall I don't know if any of them really so anything... but I'm hopeful they're doing something good so I keep taking them...
I'm interested to see what everyone else has to say!!!

Chapter 11, DANDR, "Supplements for Everyone"

If you have sugar cravings, you should also take 500mg of L-Glutamine (one or two tablets) prior to each meal. L-glutamine has been shown to curb alcohol addiction as well. If you previously ate lots of carbohydrates, this will help to ease the transition to controlled carbohydrate eating.
        Chapter 23, DANDR
For sugar cravings: 500 to 100 mg of L-glutamine before meals and/or when cravings are greatest.
For hunger not assuaged by being in lipolysis: 500 mg of L-phenylalanine or 500 mg of N-acetyl-L-tyrosine before meals.
I quoted these two sections because it gives specific dosing and timing.

Also, in your other thread, 2Big mentioned that your hunger might be thirst. Have you tried to see if that is the case?

Thanks not2late, I have been taking them exactly as he suggested, with no assuaging results though -- it's been the opposite in my case.

I have been trying to isolate my issues, and varying my food. Water has helped, and I will continue to figure out if it's the thrist issue or my change of foods. I was just wondering if anyone has had positive/negative results with these supplements.

I take L-Glutamine and it helps me immensly with the sugar cravings. Especially around TOM time. That and evening primrose oil. I swear by it!
            Sorry it's not helping you!

Keep a close eye on your foods, particularly any carby foods. Sometimes things as trivial as dressings or sauces can cause triggers or individual brands of foods. When I was going through the Dairy Rung of OWL, I found that I can only eat 1 brand of ricotta cheese because other brands caused problems for me.

That's odd. Some people just react differently than others. I take a multivitamin with chromium religiously every afternoon and it helps immensly. I don't know what I'd do without it.

Perhaps you could try that one instead?

Duh... I forgot to mention, I also take Chromium picolate (sp?) everyday also... Over all I'd say that one helps the most...

I used to take L-Glutamine when I had sugar cravings. It worked well for me and I took it whenever I felt a sugar craving coming on. Although it says to take it before meals, I took it when I needed it.

I also found that taking chromium picolinate was enough to tame my hunger. I take it daily and it keeps me from wanting to eat too much and even supresses my urge to snack. I take 1000 micrograms daily and highly recommend it.
