HAHAHAHA Boonie, I LOVE that movie!!!
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

        Vigilance, not perfection.

I can see the picture in the post AND the quote; but here it is if you can't: http://disneyshorts.toonzone.net/ch...cs/g/giant.html
Omg! The first thing I thought when I saw that pic of the giant was the poor guy squatting there with a bout of diarrhea! Too funny!

Hey, I don't look anything like that! I don't have a beard, the hair color is all wrong and my sense of style is much more refined.

Anyway, yes, I'll be the guinnea pig. However, what happens when I gorge myself one saturday and show no if any significant weight gain the following week? What if my stomach remains perfectly calm and happy throughout the ordeal and the experience is 100% rewarding? Do I then become an ADDB god for beating the odds?

At the very least, I expect a trophy out of all this.

If your body could do that after one day, where would you find the willpower not to eat like that for a week or more? And if your body could do that on a daily basis, you would probably never have need to lose weight.

Not really, because you need to eat 3500 calories over your normal intake to gain a pound of fat.

Also, you might have a metabolism that can handle over 100 net carbs daily. We have several current and former members who have CCMLs and CCLL over 100 net carbs.

Maintenance phase is different than the weight losing phases. We have goalies who do eat donuts, cakes, etc. and maintain their weight, again due to their individual metabolisms.

See that's the basic ugly point: we all have individual metabolisms and individual carbohydrate tolerance levels. Only a very small percentage of us need to eat 20 net carbs or lower to lose and/or maintain weight. The rest of us can eat more carbs and a greater variety of carbs to lose and/or maintain weight.

You're not the first person here to go on the "I wanna see how many carbs I can eat without upsetting my loss to prove you don't need to be stickler about carbs" trek. It's been done by a number of people who aren't here anymore or who are now members of the STAC forum. That's why you don't see me trying to stop you or persuade you to reconsider: I've learned my lesson that it's a waste of time to try to persuade you otherwise.

I've also have learned that usually whenever people get the "itch" it's time for them to move on from whatever Atkins phase they are currently on to the next Atkins phase because they are getting bored with the current phase.

So good-luck to you. Post your results in the Maintenance Forum: I'm sure your results will impress the goalies or the Pre-Maintainers who lurk there.

Re: How do you plan to celebrate when you reach your goal weight?

Re: the various rungs/phases, my problem with most of them isn't that I don't want to eat what they have to offer(I like dairy and nuts and berries...) it's that the amounts allotted seem so small and insignificant. Ok, I can have certain cheeses now...but only a teeny tiny bit of them. Or I can have 18 almonds or whatever. I don't really know anyone who drinks a 4oz. glass of milk and chases it with almonds that they've just numbered.

It can be argued that I've almost been on an extended induction because of this, though my carb count is probably in the 25-30 range and I'm now on week #6. It's not because I don't feel full enough all of the time, which I do, it's more that I don't want to sit here every day and count out 5 grams of carbs of all of these little new rungs. And I don't recall really being much of a nuts, cheeses, veggies or dairy person to begin with. So I guess what I'm really waiting for are the lentils and the wine and when I can actually eat a slice of bread again. All of the other stuff doesn't really interest me.

You can certainly skip over food groups you have no desire to eat or drink. The only rung I don't recommend skipping is the first rung because the additional 5 net carbs of veg supplies enough fiber that most OWLers don't need to take laxatives and because those vegetables are highly nutritious, and therefore good for our bodies and general health---afterall, we are losing weight to be healthy right? So there isn't any real logic in not giving your body the foods that will promote health.

As for measuring the 5 net carbs on OWL or the 10 net carbs on Pre-Maintenance, I used to think it was a bother, but then I learned that measuring my foods helped me to avoid overeating and helped me to learn what "normal-sized" food portions are. A typical green salad in a restaurant is easily 4-6 cups of greens---hardly a "normal" portion considering that 1 serving of raw vegetable is 1 cup. The stomach is literally a bag of muscle that is able to stretch and accomodate food. Our feeling of "fullness" in our stomachs is determined by stretch receptors in the stomach wall. When the stomach is stretched to a certain capacity, the receptors are activated and a message is sent to our brains to stop eating. Since the stomach is stretchy, if we persist in letting it stretch out we can accomodate more food---that's how those eating contest people are able to eat (and not vomit) 35 grilled cheese sandwiches or 50 hotdogs. If the stomach isn't allowed to be persistently stretched out, it won't hold as much food and the perception of "fullness" will be achieved relatively sooner. So imagine this: you lose weight, but you don't learn what normal portions are and you've kept your stomach at the same stretch capacity as it was when you were obese. What'll happen? Most likely, you'll overeat because you didn't learn that a 15 cup mountain of salad greens wasn't a normal portion and you'll constantly feel "hungry" because your stomach hasn't shrunk with the rest of your body. So you'll probably regain all your weight because you didn't take the time to learn and train yourself how to eat properly for your smaller body.

Also, I can't figure out how you can stay with "Induction" and eat up to 30 net carbs daily--unless you are already eating that additional 5 or 10 net carbs of vegetables or you are filling up on non-vegetable net carbs.

I did stipulate that I was "almost on extended induction" as a result of not really desiring to eat what is allowed during rungs 1-4. I added the veggies and I'm less cautious about dairy which I figure brings me up to the 25 carb mark. I haven't used fitday in awhile but it wouldn't surprise me if I was padding the number and I was still falling below the 20 carb mark on certain days.

And let me iterate before I receive any number of responses about how I'm doing things wrong and haven't read the book and blah, blah, all of that other stuff you people love to spew, that I have not eaten anything I'm not allowed to up to rung 3. I just don't forcefully add 5 grams of carbs from each one every day because it doesn't appeal to me. As for portion normality...I don't recall 5 grams of anything being considered a "normal" portion since I was about 12. And I don't think 12 or 16 or however many macadamia nuts has ever filled me up before at any age. And I haven't always been overweight.

I DO understand the gradual increase in carbs and why it's necessary. I just don't LIKE it. And I don't like the fact that you can't, say, have an additional 5 grams of lentil carbs instead of your 5 gram rung allotment and the 5 grams of nuts that you didn't feel like eating for that day. This is where the diet gets coplicated I think. Unless you're a very small person and have a ton of extra time on your hands to portion your food, it's enough to drive a person crazy.

As a new member(and the significant other of a new member), I can assure you that it's very easy to become frustrated on these boards when half of the replies you receive a some variation of "Read the book!". And a good portion of the remaining half tend to throw it in there as an afterthought when they've completed their actual helpful response.

Am I supposed to consider that anything other than presumptuous and rude behaviour? I think it should be assumed that everyone already HAS read the book unless they specify otherwise. I suspect that many people already know the answer to their question before they post it. They simply want a little reassurance and support.

I've had an issue with this since day #1 and many "read-the-bookers", as I refer to them now, are condescending and harbor a much spunkier, snooty attitude than I could ever manage to reproduce. So forgive me if I choose to address them pre-emptively in my posts before they have the chance to bless me with their "wisdom". Notice how not one person has suggested that I read the book on this post? Scroll through some of the other posts on this and expecially the Induction board and tell me how often you see this sage advice.

Again, it's frustrating to me and the only method I know to avoid it seems to be to address the response before anyone even types it out. Don't take it personally. Just roll with it.
