  • Connections between the GI diet and Atkins?

I'm just curious. I did the GI diet before with relatively good success - 15 lbs in just over two weeks. From the guidelines I have found from when I did it before, it's got the same goal of eating low GI foods, banishing cravings and such, but I ate Beans on wholemeal toast everyday on it (I love it - true Brit at heart!) and that's a big no no in the early stages of Atkins.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Carbs need insulin no glucagon to process and fat needs glucagon no insulin to be process the two chemicals are in a negative feed back loop so we can't be burning off our body fat if we are having higher GI foods needing nore insulin production to process

atkins OWL is about learning in a very controlled manner what carb food types your body can handle and can't so they are ranked by glycemic index in the order they come back with more of the low GI veggies as the first addition back.

If your body can handle beans rung 6 and grains rung 9 as part of your weight loss program then you will be able to eat them as part of it. Form Dr Atkins 30+ yrs experience with folk on his plan he learned that many folk could not contine to lose weight eating those foods. Most premaintnenace folk and maintnenace folk can have them as part of their Atkins if they chose.

How long you decide to take to get to the point you can have them again is interly up to you but based on his knowledge Dr Atkins thinks those grains should be the very last thing you add back.

as Dr Atkins says in chapter 11 any plan where your caloric intake is less then your caloric expenditure form all sources you will lose weight.
