    Does it really increase one's metabolism? Lately, I've been hearing positive reviews. Any good or bad experiences? IT does have a lot of saturated fat though.

    I've read pros and cons about it.

    IF you do use it, make very, very, very certain that it is the unprocessed/refined coconut oil. The refined coconut oil tends to be hydrogenated (and contains those bad trans fats). So look for the unrefined stuff.

      from what I have read (ad nauseum at this point) ... it seems to burn up well....but so does olive oil and pure butter.... but to think it actually boosts the metabolism is not making physiologic sense to me ..I think it is a decent fat if you are willing to pay the insane price for it instead of using butter or olive oil ..it does taste good .but will you loose wt faster using it or have any great bennies from it ...not convinced here...
      like Megs said you have to buy the pure unrefined or you might as well be eating crisco

        For the money it costs, I'd not waste that oil on cooking. It is an excellent carrier oil, however, so if you make herbal oils or enjoy an aromatherapy massage, by all means buy it. I've cooked with it, and decidedly determined the taste of the oil alone is not that great compared to butter, olive oil & bacon drippings. This may be however, due to the oil's age, as flavor tends to deteriorate when oil begins to go rancid.

          I used regular processed coconut oil in my tub and buy it by the gallon! it is an amazing moisturizer ..the processed one as Boonie girl says it the best carrier for fragrance I have found so I buy all types of essential oils and mix my own aroma therapy for the tub ..it is great for massages because it does not stain either it washes right out..but again I personally would only buy the type I find in Indian and African markets in big containers and use it on my body not in it ..I get a gallon of Parachuit (and it says it is pure and usable for cooking but I am not sure how processed it is so I dont eat it) in Canada at an Indian market for $15 ..the organic virgin coconut oil in our local healthfood store is $20 for a pint ...

            This is the second post I've seen looking for products to boost metabolism. The best way to boost your metabolism is to eat and exercise. Working this way of life can make you so happy.
            Coconut oil is a good fat to combat yeast, tastes good in foods, makes a killer hair conditioner/skin conditioner.

            The best gift you can give yourself is the beauty of learning how to do this wol the proper way. Adding in veggies and fruits, eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day, learning about your body and what it can tolerate. By doing such you will have accomplished the highest ability to maintain weight control, balance and good health.

            I have been on maintenance now for quite a few years. Some tips tricks I have learned to help me not only achieve optimum weight loss but optimum health as well.

            Eat 5x a day
            Eat colorful foods for these are nutrients for specific areas of the body and to prevent degenerative disease
            work on your body from the inside out not the outside in
            Eat as naturally as possible. You're eating naturally but is your food? In this I mean the highest quality of food for the highest quality of life.
            Cut out all artificial sweeteners at some point. this may be a slow process but one you will be very happy with.
            saccharin=carcinogens
            Aspartame=formaldahyde
            splenda=arsenic

            ORGANIC ORGANIC ORGANIC
            Oh and did I mention organic?
            Good luck to you for a lifetime of succesful maintenance. There is more to weight loss than looking good. Take your time to learn about the most valuable asset you have.....your body.
            Make it a happy low carb life!

                  Isn't it funny how the latest most advertised supplements claiming to be good for this & good for that are things processed foods have been stripped of (how else can industry profit on the same produce twice?!) and which we Atkiners don't need because they're ingredients found in the foods we are eating. Perhaps this is one reason we stay fit on Atkins without the pricey pills & powders?

                      Boonie, I'm very suspicious about "miracle foods" for a number of reasons, including what you said---in order to make the "miracle food" more palatable to Western tastebuds, they process and refine away the vital nutrients that made them "miracle foods". Also the manufacturers have a way of obscuring studies or data contrary to their advertizements. For example, soy is promoted as a miracle food, but how many people know it can mess up thyroid function so much that the American Academy of Pediatrics has said there is no medical reason for using soy-based baby formulas?

                      Be skeptical of "miracle foods".

                        The worst thing to me is the way the food, nutrition, health and pharmaceutical industries all push misleading propaganda at us through all the media (even targeting kids) to brainwash us into eating wrong and then into believing you need their highly specialized medical breakthroughs to cure you of malaise caused by a poor diet.

                        That anyone would feed soy formula to infants is shocking!
                        And now that our pets are being promoted "healthy" (NOT!!) cheaper to produce over-processed grain-based foods instead of their natural diet, the market is opening up for pushing pet supplements as well. UGH!!

                            I remember a couple of years ago, they came out with a reduced sugar Captain Crunch or something like that. Yeah, Captain Crunch is good for breakfast because it has 50% less sugar! (Gee, I wonder how much more nutritious scrambled eggs for breakfast is?)

                            oh don't get me started. My pet is a cat. He is a obligate carnivore. The only time he chews on oatgrass is to get rid of his hairballs. I can only imagine what he'd do if I gave him a vegan cat formula----he'd jump on the table and start eating my dinner!
