  • Giving blood on Atkins...

I've scheduled myself to donate blood this Friday and just now started thinking about how my body might negatively react to the process given that my sugar intake is so low. I also know that they're sticklers at the clinics about your drinking juice and eating cookies and whatnot before they let you go. Is my diet something I need to explain to them before I donate? Will my protein intake take care of the blood reproduction? Is there something specific I should eat afterwards that day? All help is appreciated.

Interesting question. I don't think the "Red Cross Ladies" can force you to drink juice and eat a cookie. Perhaps if you say that you have a healthy snack and water in the car, they will let you skate?

I'm sure one of the mods will have an answer for you. I'll be interested to see what it is, seeing as I haven't given blood since I started Atkins 4 1/2 months ago.

    Again, interesting question!

Richt gives blood all the time. You should PM him perhaps. I know he doesn't have the cookie and juice. I think he brings his own snack.

i doubt they will let you just up and leave without something to eat. instead of leaving your snack in the car, take it in with you. the only problem i ever had with giving blood while on atkins was i got too skinny. they said at one point i didn't weigh enough.

        i agree, chat with rich.

No need to pm me, I will say it here.

When I give blood, I take with me some baby bel cheeses to eat afterwards. And just make sure I sit down for a while. But in all fairness, I don't generally feel any different now than I did when I was a big lad and donated blood.

          I hope that helps.

Thanks for the responses! I will be donating RIGHT before I eat lunch on Friday so I should probably be fine(and they should be fine knowing that). I'll pick up some cheeses to wave in front of them after my appointment, though.

Thanks for asking that question and thanks for answering ritch, I haven't really thought about that and I give blood all the time. But, thankfully they don't make me eat anything if I don't want to because they know I am on a tight schedule to get back to my kids....but i will start bringing some cheese and like maybe a bottle of crystal light ( to make them think "sugar") just incase I was to ever pass out because then they would MAKE you eat something.

                  Re: Giving blood on Atkins...

I have given blood and now quite often give platelets while on Atkins. It has never adversely affected me. As for the after donation juice and snack, water usually suffices for the drink. I asked them to offer something more accomodating to low carbers like nuts or beef sticks, but they said it might be more likely to induce choking. At this point, I have my water and leave. Your blood center may be more accomodating than mine to your request, and like was said, you can always bring your own snack if they are vigilant about seeing you eat.

I'm a regular blood donnor and it is more the fluid then the sugar they removed in that pint of blood you need to replace. take a snack just incase you do feel light headed and some bottoled water.

PS I just drink a big glass of water and go back to work ....there is no one going to make you do anything in particular the cookies and juice are kind of a tradition and some people get faint and feel better emotionally if they get something ..part of the reason we are all so fat!

I donate blood every 3 months. I just donated yesterday. They don't force you to eat or drink anything here in Canada. I just drank some water afterwards.

It seems like I donate about once/year. I'd do it more often if blood drives were more convenient. I think a lot more people would. This time around, they're actually coming to the office and setting up about 40 feet away from me.
