I am on day 19 of Atkins induction.
Yesterday I cooked up a pork crackling joint plus an extra foot of free crackling the butcher gave me. When it was ready about 11am I just had quite a bit of crackling (with about 1oz of meat attached) with a tiny green salad. I was then working all day and, as I did not feel hungry at all, I forgot to eat a proper meal; I just guzzled water all day long at my computer desk.
Then about 5pm I had some more strips of crackling on their own and more water all evening. Only when safely tucked up in bed did I realise how little I had eaten all day - just the tiniest salad and a lot of pork fat.
I mused on how just 3 weeks ago I was literally pick, pick, pick, all day long; my body sending me a hundred times to the kitchen for "something" to nibble, hungry all day and eating chocolate, crisps, biscuits etc. I was a textbook case - a compulsive eater. It was an emotional problem and I was doomed!
When I woke at 5am I felt really wide awake, not groggy like I usually do, and I also felt slimmer and lighter and well, just better all over. I rose and began work.
Beyond all doubt, it is a fact that carbs make me hungry and no matter how many I eat, I am never, ever, satisfied, my body seems to be sending me out searching for something else and something else, and is never sated until it gets a darned good lot of fat inside it. Then, lo and behold, I am not that "compulsive picker" or "out of control eater" that I thought I was! Instead I am a person who had only two portions of food all day and totally forgot to eat anything else!
My high-fat day turned me into from "cannot-stop-eating" person into a "totally-forgot-to-eat" person. The doctors offered me appetite suppressants - why didn't they just prescribe pork crackling? It sure tastes better than pills!
Well, well! If it works for me ...... ?
(Disclaimer: yes I know I am supposed to eat three meals, blah blah I am just saying how amazing it was that my appetite was killed stone dead by eating very high-fat foods. Obviously, I am going to make sure I eat a decent amount of protein every day.)
