  • Vacation concerns

DH and I are going to a nice resort on vacation next week and I am thrilled with the exception of the food issue.

First I have to confess I hate most gourmet food. If it looks like straight from the can Mighty Dog topped with a nest of dental floss frozen in an arrangement of dramatic flair with superhold AquaNet and presented on a huge plate I start mentally going through the list of drive thru's we'll pass on the way home so I can eventually have something edible before the night is over. DH has given up on trying to get me to admit a $200 bottle of wine tastes any better than a $2 bottle of ripple (I make the same wrenched up face either way) and I have conceded to just order water to drink rather than Diet Pepsi in better restaurants. There is an age difference with us and I think he sometimes feels like he's with a kid when he's sipping a good glass of wine and there I sit with my straw in my glass.

I've looked at all the menus for the restaurants in the resort and let me say the first one terrified me because it offered pan seared sugar cured ostrich. All the restaurants serve high carb sides with the entrees and the best I can find is a chicken caesar salad which I can't eat for 8 days straight. We'll only have a rental car for one day so I know I can find something that day but the rest I am just going to be winging it. I googled some nearby restaurant options outside the resort and there are some good choices but it's going to be 100+ degrees and it will be over a mile walk and of course I want to dress nice with pretty shoes to go to dinner on vacation. I can prolly manage breakfast ok and surely I can con a simple green salad out of some chef for lunch but I just don't want to be starving for dinner and end up eating the entire pizza box whole straight from the delivery guy's hand before he even gets out of his car. I remember from doing Atkins before that if I do get hungry and don't have any low carb options available it is the most painful, desperate hunger I have ever experienced. And that "cheating" will make you sick as a dog. I can maybe take some nuts with me to eat but as much as I am looking forward to the rest of the vacation the food issue makes me very nervous.

I am praying for some decent delivery options nearby!! Send positive vibes next week please!!

GiGi, Ask the restaurant if they have diabetic options!!! Surely, they would want to accommodate all of their guests. If they do, then you should be able to get something...grilled chicken without the sauce, steamed vegetables or salads. If they have meat options, ask for them with the sauce on the side. I'm sure these are reasonable requests...and get them frequently...the low-fat people would surely ask for it and get it. You can too.

Oh and by the way...I hear you on the wine thing...I'd just as soon have a bottle of Boones Farm wine than anything else.

Also you can ask them to substitute a high carb dish for a lower carb one. For example, if the steak comes with scalloped potatoes and broccoli, ask the waiter to give you another portion of broccoli instead of the potatoes. Most places are willing to do that. No need for you to explain why you want that change. ("Customer is always right", right? )

You might also want to see if they have a gluten-free menu or gluten-free items. Gluten is the protein in wheat and there are a number of people who are allergic to it.

I agree...I've eaten at several restruarants and hotels that are more than willing to substitute items for their guests. Simply explain that you are unable to eat certain foods...they want to keep you happy and recommending their facility to your friends.
