Personally, after my back injury, I was thrilled to be able to walk to the front door and back! Then, I went for the driveway. Then, the block (just to the corner and back). Then, around the block. Slowly, but surely, I built up my distance and speed. Now I typically walk a 15-minute mile - that's 4 miles per hour, baby!

Keep at it. Listen to your body. If you're feeling sore, ease off a little and re-approach the distance or speed!

By the way, I just past my 50 pound weight loss mark -- and I believe that walking played an equal role to my eating! I'm stronger and leaner than I was the last time I was this weight, because I'm working out.

Good luck, kids! I look forward to seeing big successes from both of you!

    50 lbs??? WOW...congrats Stacy! That's awesome...cant wait to say that myself...hopefully I will be able too...LOL.

I just started walking too (Wednesday)....I was going to walk the golf course here (it's a little over 2 miles BUT...its SOOOOOOOOO hot here)....so instead I go to the GYM and use the treadmill....I walk 45 minutes at a pretty normal speed....not slow not jogging, but fast enough....I thankfully have not been sore from it and in that time I walk 2.20 miles.....so I'm groovy.....

Thankfully you guys answered that question with the muscles retaining water for repair...I didnt know that and I wasnt sure why I wasnt seeing any pounds drop.......

A couple of years ago, Leslie Sansone wrote a walking program for Woman's Day magazine. It has some good ideas to "boost" your walking experience, like alternating speed and distance goals, carrying hand-weights during the walk, etc..

I can't lose very fast with walking alone. I have to do some kind of aerobics video. I do step-aerobics.

Also, to really lose, I have to have a workout (video) at least 5 times a week. I lose it twice as fast if I do.

            Re: Walking And Weight Loss???

I love walking. I've been a forum member here for some months. Frankly, in that time, I've made little progress. I'm a 100lb loser that put 10lbs back on. I'm no stranger to Atkins ...but the magic was having a hard time starting again ...until I found the treadmill. It makes it sooooo much easier to kick over into ketosis.

            Walk, walk, walk.

            Good Luck!!

                  Re: Walking And Weight Loss???

oh walking is great but as you get in better shape you need to speed up or go longer just to get the same amount of fat burned off. I started at about 2MPH and thought I was Rocky on top of those steps when i did 20 min. now I do over an Hour 3 days alternating 4.5 and 7MPH on incline 7.5 as my HIIT walking and do cardio 3 days at 7.5 flat. I've been walking since 2002 everyday but sunday for exercise. You are going to be amazed how fast your body will improve in stamina and spped as you get into your program. There is a pck of workout tapes called WALK AWAY THE POUNDS or WATP on ADBB that many larger folk started out with. They were too bouncy for my knees so i skipped them but Brook used them and highly recommends them for beginers.

                      Re: Walking And Weight Loss???

For a multitude of reasons, walking is the only cardio I've ever done, and the only cardio I'll ever do.

                      Speed: About 4.1 mph.
Time: 20-30 minutes - 20 if I've just done resistance training.
                      Incline: None.
Frequency: About 3 days a week.

I used to be quite the runner ... too many years ago. Whenever I get back into running, I'm good for a few weeks, but then something happens. My knees feel like liquid sterno, or my heart rate stays too high after a work out, or something else gets in teh way ...and I go off the exercise trolley for a few weeks.

Walking just isn't like that. I stay with it becuase it's fun and it rarely gives me that attractive (OH...I WONDER IF I'LL DIE) feeling!

                                Hi

You may find your body has retained fluid after your excerise. If you have been more physcial than normal - your body will go into protection mode by holding fluid. It will
go soon, don't worry. Even just walking will do this, I have had the same experience.

I love walking also, it builds nicer long lean muscle rather than bulk. It does not over
stress your body and you can enjoy everything around you also.

                                Take care
