  • Cholesterol Results are in!

    My cholesterol results are in and the news is good (for the most part)!

    Pre-Atkins:1/11/06 ........Atkins:6/12/06............Change:

    Total cholesterol - 268 ..........194..................... -74
    Triglycerides - 249 ...............187 .....................-62
    HDL - 46 .............................35.7................. ... -10.3
    VLDL - 50
    LDL - 172 ...........................120 ......................-52

    So I am very happy about the overall effect but a little disheartened about the HDL. I don't smoke or drink. I lost weight and started exercising. Not sure why the decrease in HDL?? My ratio is 5.43 which is still too high. Any ideas on raising the HDl - short of becoming a workout fiend? I love my walking and my workout videos. Before Atkins, I did NO planned exercise. Now I do 3-5 days a week unless something odd happens.

    Suggestions...anyone?

        Lots of cardiovascular exercise will help raise HDL along with garlic, fish oil, and flush-free niacin.

        Great job on the cholesterol!!

          I agree with Betty, omega-3 fatty acids will raise up that HDL. Fabulous reduction overall, however!!!

            sorry i was on vacation when Barbde PMed me.

            Have you added any meds since the first test?
            there are some foods you can eat as part of your Atkins to raise your HDL as well like almonds and walnuts, and flax seed meal help alot.

            resistance exercise will help too.

            there are some vits and minerals you can take too as Betty pointed out but check with your doc first as niacin in higher doses needs liver funtion monitoring.
