Re: Had Gallbladder revomed, can I still do Atkins?
I hope 2big swoops in and offers up the science, but here is an excerpt of something straight from Dr. A:
Link: http://www.webmd.com/content/article/2/1705_57167Member: Is this way of eating OK for people who have had their gallbladder removed? Is fat content a worry for us?
Atkins: There is no question that people without a gallbladder have done well on the diet, sometimes the amount of fat eaten at one sitting does have to be restricted but this is something that a person learns from experience. Remember the diet is a low-carb diet and doesn't have to be high in fat. It simply has to be controlled in its carbohydrate quantities. People with gallbladder disease by now have learned how much fat they can tolerate at one sitting and still abide by those findings.

Re: Had Gallbladder revomed, can I still do Atkins?
Oh, and I had what could only be explained as gall bladder attacks (by my doctor) when I was on a high carb/high fat diet, which completely disappeared on Atkins.
I also had regular, weekly problems with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when I was on the high carb/high fat diet and that completely (no episodes ever again) disappeared immediately after starting Atkins.
I know the WOE should not be considered a cure for anything, but I really had a lot of problems gastrointestinally pre-Atkins, and now I feel wonderful inside like my body can finally work properly.

Not a problem in the world here. Remember to focus on "healthy" fats. I had my gallbladder removed a few months before I started Atkins (please note I was on a low fat diet then). I have never had a problem.Bren

Re: Had Gallbladder removed, can I still do Atkins?
I had my gall bladder removed in February of this year. My first fear was that it was going to affect my Atkins WOL, but it hasn't much except for eggs and bacon, which I never liked all the much anyway.
I never had issues with fatty foods, but I did with the common gall bladder trigger foods of eggs, pork (sausage/bacon) and nuts. I ate eggs my first 2 years on Atkins, but they all of a sudden started giving me issues (abdominal pain, IBS) along with other foods (spicy ones did for a while) that set off my gall bladder attacks and resulted in my trip to the ER and eventual diagnoses then surgery.
I still have issues with eggs and bacon, and limit my nuts to just a handful here and there. I was eventually able to deal with spicy foods again though I try to be careful, but I can handle hot wings okay (thank goodness!) Certain foods can be a gall bladder trigger, but I think it varies person to person.
I'd just recommend paying close attention to what you are eating, keeping track of it in Fitday and noting which foods give you issues and tailor your eating accordingly. I've had no issues changing little things here and there to still fit within Atkins.Start date: 2/22/04 347/222/135 ~ 5'2"

Re: Had Gallbladder removed, can I still do Atkins?
When you have a cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal) many of you already know that the bile goes more directly to your intestines. Food moves through your body faster also, which causes the common side effect of diarrhea. That's why we're often told to eat low-fat, but in reality it isn't necessary. You just have to learn what you can and can't tolerate.
After cholecystectomy, bile is still produced by the liver, but is released in a continuous, slow trickle into the intestine. Thus, when eating a meal that is high in fat content, there may not be an adequate amount of bile in the intestine to properly handle the normal absorption process. The change in intestinal bile concentration during high-fat intake may cause diarrhea or bloating, because excess fat in the intestine will draw more water into the intestine, and because bacteria digest the fat and produce gas. Some studies suggest that diarrhea after cholecystectomy may also be caused by excess bile in the intestine between meals, because bile is released into the intestine continuously.
After cholecystectomy, you should begin with clear liquids, once passing gas progress to full liquids (milk based, soups, pudding, etc.). You may then advance slowly to a regular diet as tolerated. Loose stools initially are not uncommon. No long-term dietary restrictions or changes will be required (most people do better without their gallbladder). Learn for yourself what foods you cannot tolerate and omit them fr5om your diet, which preferable should be a low in fat. But reintroduce foods slowly and little at a time. Remember, the key is to eat what you can tolerate.

Re: Had Gallbladder removed, can I still do Atkins?
This is a really awesome thread. I had my gall bladder removed in the beginning of December (after the diagnosis it was actually a really awesome experience. 5 days in the hospital watching daytime TV, drinking broth and having everyone get really excited when I felt like showering--THAT is a vacation! ;D) and was a little nervous about coming back. So far I haven't found any trigger foods but I'll keep my eyes (and tummy) open.Female, 21, 5'6"
