  • Reflux...strange.

    Hey all,

I used to be plagued by horrible reflux. Really affected me socially. I was always swalling pills. I lost 100lbs on Dr. A's diet, and it all went away. Frankly, it went away long before that much weight was lost.

Now, here's the thing that I find strange. I assumed that the reflux went away becuase the weight went away. However, when (as I did this weekend) I "stray", I find that my reflux comes back in spades!! I have to believe something bio-chemical is going on. it isn't just the weight on the belly, becuase it comes back right away after a day of "carbing".

    Anyone else ever notice this?

One more good reason to NEVER, EVER stray again...EVER!!

That same thing happened to me, no reflux for two years with atkins (my whole life had had reflux), sudenly it appeared again, a soon as I started taking lactobacilus, it went away. It is normal when you eat bad carbs that the reflux returns.

I've noticed this effect a little bit before. But I went "off" a couple of times in teh last few months and EACH TIME the reflux comes back w/a vengence. I asked a doc about it ...and there's no real reason that anyone can come up with as to why this is so.

I seem to remember Dr. Atkisn talking about this on his last Larry King interview.

I suffer from reflux when I eat certain foods. I had to reintroduce different foods to figure that out. I always thought it was from tomatoes or meat and so on, and now I know it's from refined flour foods. Donuts and so on.

I had this ..and it was horrible I just knew I had throat cancer because I smoked in my early more crazy years ....my throat was constantly sore and my tummy was always upset, nausea ...the pain ...it wa horrible and I empathise!!! .......when I lost my first 20lbs it disapeared....now every now and then when I drink red wine or eat chocolate I get the symptoms again ..but they are limited to specific events of eating as yours seem to be ..and really GERD is caused by a multitude of things but loosing weight is a huge factor in the relief of it ....however some thin folks have it as well ...so eat right ..avoid the triggers for it ...there are lists of foods that aggrivate it ...and hopefully you will be able to controle it with out pills....

I know if I drink Merlot and eat chocolate I am in serious trouble reflux hurts!!!

I feel for you all. I had heart burn once in my life and it was horrible. It's no wonder it's called "heart burn"

But there are a number of reasons for it. If losing weight and/or eliminating a trigger food gives you relief, go for it. I think your lifestyle modifications enable you to avoid taking medication or decreases the amount of medications you need to take, it's much much better for you in the long run!

                Re: Reflux...strange.

For some of us low carbing and loosing weight doesn't cure it.

I have Refractory Reflux Disease (which means extremely hard to control GERD) and it had already progressed to Barrett's Esophogus before it was diagnosed. I take 2 prescriptions everyday to control it and if I miss one even by a couple of hours I suffer horribly all day.

Eating late a night and then laying down will trigger it too. One of the suggestions for helping to control it is to eat 6 small meals a day instead of 3 bigger meals. It seems to give the acid something to do besides burn more ulcers in your esophogus!

I was a guinea pig in a research study for GERD. They told me that alot of times people gain weight when they have GERD not nesicarly get GERD because they gained. They said that people with GERD tend to eat more to try and make themselves feel better and this leads to weight gain.

I wake up several times a week with stomach acid coming out my nose (Gross and Painful!) and end up hugging the comode. It is NO fun at all, believe me I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy!

I have endoscopies w/ biopsy's every 6 months to check for throat cancer which is the next stage.

According to Dr. Atkins in the DANDR and The Vitanutrients, most of the stomach and intestine illness has to do in some way with a candida overgrowth, yeast infection or food allergies.

Lactobacilus is the good bacteria that fights candida. Candida eats bad carbohidrates like sugar and flour. When you eat those things the candida overgrows somehow causing the reflux. You can find lactobacilus in GNC.

I attributed mine to food allergies after I tried Atkins, cheated, and found myself immediately fighting reflux once again. Then again I'm no physician. I do find that I don't fight reflux on this WOE, and absolutely it's one of the better incentives to keep me faithful to it.
