    Re: The Rule of 5

I rarely taste the food I prepare ..when my moods and my ideas are right I know exactly how it will taste in the end ..and that is never the same way twice

I am a very instinctual cook that is good and bad...bad if you want to bake a cake or make something again ...good if eating is all about the moment!!!

I never have to taste my food to know how it came out ....

usually I will go and walk around outside for a few min ..that helps a lot then when I come back in the smells are new again and I can sit and enjoy the food!!!

if you are a person who is precise you should not have to taste it either!!! it should be what you expect! enjoy your food on a plate at the table I say!!!

Megs, in one of George Stella's cookbooks he addresses this. He basically said that he'd be so busy cooking, cooking, cooking and not eat, but then come home late at night and he would be ravenous at that point but couldn't muster the energy to cook himself something healthy....so out came the easy junk food, and lots of it.

Maybe after work, they eat huge meals?

My stepfather is an excellent chef. Growing up one would think I had lavish home cooked meals all the time, right? WRONG! Chefs CANNOT BE BOTHERED to cook more than they have to.
My stepdads actual eating habits include Chef Boyardee, Taco Bell and anything else quick and easy.

there are reports quoted on some weight loss websites that folk who cook their own meals get more satisfaction and eat less because the satisfaction starts with the sight and smell of the foods as they are being cut, chopped, prepped, etc, and by meal time pleasure chems which suppress appetite are allready circulating compared to those who go out, or open a can or box and eat.

              Re: The Rule of 5

My grandmother always taught us to chew food thoroughly. Even soup, as the longer it is on the palate the greater the satiety it brings. The sense of smell and taste go together, so it only makes sense smelling would serve to satisfy, as well as an occasional licking of the dipped cooking utensil. Even without a bite during cooking. If I didn't lick I'd not get the sauce just right.

While eating, thorough chewing, even of soups, seems to make me feel full sooner. Been trying that, and spacing things I eat apart by at least a minute, even nuts. Seems to also help me desire less.

                Re: The Rule of 5

There are some foods I have to taste because I need to get the seasoning right, like meatballs. I usually cook a teaspoon of the mix and taste it to make sure the salt is okay. But otherwise, I'm not that much of a "taster".

But you can definitely eat more when someone else is doing the cooking, or if the food is rather bland. I've learned that strong-flavored foods go a long way.

                        Re: The Rule of 5

Oh yeah, those "kiddie" foods are disgraceful. One of my supermarkets completely re-arranged the aisles so the "baby supplies" are across from the paper goods. I was amazed to see toddler sausages (they looked like vienna sausages), a tv-dinner type thing, baby/toddler version of potato chips, cookies.

Lots of kid food. I know from work and from my own acquaintances that these kids get used to having "their own food", so it makes family meal planning difficult. I guess peopel nowadays don't subscribe to my parent's rule: the family is served one meal, if you don't want to eat it, you don't eat.

                        Editing to add...

There is one baby/toddler product that I purchase for myself. Gerber has freeze-dried corn and apples that are only the veg or fruit. I use them in my snack mixes.

It's absolutely disguisting how marketing is directed to children.
It's even more disguisting to see the parents roll over and buy this crap for their children

Just the other day a woman was in front of me in the grocery store. Her child asked for candy...she said no we don't buy that it's not good for you....the child threw a tantrum and the mother ignored it. She gracefully picked her child up apologized to me to which I replied "Good for you Mom....no apology necessary. I'm glad to see a parent in control"
