  • Protein Shakes?

I wanted to know if its ok to have a protein shake with zero carbs, from the health food store for my breakfast sometimes or just to replace a meal.
its not something that i would do all the time but just to make me feel that i can have something elese to drink other than water.

if it has zero carbs then thats all that matters right?

Wrong. You have to check the list of ingredients. If there's anything in there that isn't appropriate for the rung you are on then you can't have it till you get to that rung. What about decaf tea or coffee or floating a slice of lemon or cucumber in your water just for a change now and then? A shake is just going to hinder your success and you should probably avoid it.

Remember that Atkins is not a 'high protein' way of eating, but a highfat/medium protein/low carb regime.

As far as I know a protein shake will contain much more protein in relation to fat and so you will be running the risk of overeating (overdrinking) protein.

Our bodies will turn excess protein into glucose (sugar) in preference to burning fat and so impede any weightloss from cutting carbs!!

thanks for the info ...but i did think of that ,my body might turn the excess proten into Sugar...but i wouldnt have the shakes every day just like probably 3 times a week for breakfast just for a change from eggs and bacon and cheese
it will at least give the diet some variety

Why are you restricting yourself to eggs, bacon and cheese for one of your meals???

The allowed list of foods contains a wide variety of interesting and delicious ingredients which you can eat at any time of day!
One member posted she often eats taco salad for breakfast!

Choose any food you enjoy eating for your first meal of the day rather thaNn a powder mixed with water!! Where's the enjoyment in that?

BTW I have never eaten eggs and bacon for breakfast - but do often have it for lunch when we eat at a local cafe, usually with mushrooms to spread my carbs over the day!!

Even just haing a high blood sugar 3 days a week will cause you issues. It will knock you out of ketosis unsupress your appetite and cause you to have sweets carvings. Also while you are sugar mode your body can't burn fat so poof all the high fat food you already had and the fatty acids in your blood stream are being stored as fat in your fat cells.

find out the nutrition in the shake and make it Atkins friendly buy adding some fat if it is low fat since you are determined to have it.
