  • Being scrutinized at the company cookout

I just went out to the company cookout and grabbed a couple of burgers (no buns) and had to hightail it back to my desk to put them in the nice green salad I brought to work for my supper. People started talking about me saying " He must be on Atkins" It's a shame I couldn't just hang outside and eat my meal without being looked at wierd...
But you know what...I didn't care becuse I weighed myself after a 30 mile backpacking trip this weekend and I am down 21.5 lbs this year!
Got about another 10 to go!
So here I sit at my desk eating my own way, out of the spotlight, relating to people who can understand!

    Screw'em.

I had to stop going to my favorite diner because I couldn't stand the dotty conversation from the well-meaning-waitress.

No, I really don't want toast or potatoes.

    No. Not even one piece.

Yes. Yes. That's right. No ketchup, thanks very much.

(me trying to eat, her still chatting)

Nope. No sugar either. Thanks though.

---The same conversation ...day ...after ...day ....after ...day. It was a mess.

You just say to yourself - they're only interested because I'm doing somethign really special---and then move one.

Boring and tredious, isn't it. Still, you'll be the fit and healthy one and they'll be pigging out on bread and cakes - and feeling rotten with it.

Some may scrutinize... and some may eventually follow. There may even be some comrades hanging around out there in fit bodies! After my 40 lb. weight loss and countless queries last year I started noticing some changes in the usual teacher's lounge fare... fewer colleagues choosing the school cafeteria carb-laden lunches and more choosing a low-carb way of eating. Some went SouthBeach, some Atkins, and I found out later that several of my slimmer colleagues have been "doing Atkins" for years!

Sometimes I just eat the burger with my fingers and say the bread ruins it, lol. I've also answered the looks with, "bread makes me fart".

Its weird how some people make us feel embarrassed about our WOE. I'm happy to tell people I'm on Atkins and everyone I've met so far has been ok with it. I did it last year so my friends/family are used to it! New people just ask the usual questions, can u eat bread or pasta blah blah blah. The only thing that gets me down is the social aspect of the diet. As I'm on Extended Induction I cant have any alcohol so I dont go out that much, at least I'm saving my £££'s. I used to love eating out b4 the diet. Now I dont bother, I dont want to eat just a salad when I go to a Restaurant and pay £7-£10 for it when I can make it myself for alot less! Why pay £15-£20 for a steak when again I can get it at the supermarket for £5?

How do these people know you aren't allergic to wheat flour and that's why you avoided the bread?

How do these people know you are a diabetic and your doctor advised you to cut down on your carbs?

Don't pay any attention to them. Stand your ground. If they try to make you feel "weird" or pressure you into having "just 1 bite", ask them would they make someone with a peanut allergy feel "weird" or pressure them into having "just 1 bite" of a peanut butter cookie.

You are losing weight for your general health. Just because you are choosing not to eat refined, processed carbohydrates loaded with trans fats and added sugars, shouldn't make you the "weirdo".

I get this too...If I avoid sugar and bread people say Oh ya she's doing Atkins...like poor me...oh ya poor me I am eating great and look awesome feel great and I am the only one not nearly passed out after lunch from carb overload....YA think poor me I am laughing all the way.

I have tried to encourage others at work to try the best eating plan on earth and have given out copies of DANDR but so far I guess they would just rather enjoy gluenious tasteless buns and white bread and feel tired and fat...Its ok you gotta get to the point where you are willing to make a change on your own.

THE BREAD MAKES ME FART IS SOOOOO FUNNY.....LOLOLOLOL

When I started Atkins my husband and kids were awful. They refered to it as "Fatkins". They worried about my cholesterol. They tempted me with pizza.

It has been 9 months and I've lost 75 pounds. My dh has been on for 4 months and lost 32 pounds. My oldest son needs to drop 25 to 30 pounds to get back to fighting trim, so he's on induction. After my last round of bloodwork from the doctor, they realized that this is a very healthy WOE.
