  • Multiple questions....

These are for anyone who might know, but I'm particularly hoping that 2Big4MySize posts to these questions, as well as umm, sorry, I can see faces but can't remember everyone's names.

Anyway, I'm seriously considering adding CoQ10 to my vitamin regime, and long ago, I remember someone here saying to make sure it was made with _____, or had a ____ base, or something like that. Please click on this link, and see if these are good ones? They're about as cheap as I can find online, and definitely cheaper than my local Health Food Store.

Also, what oil is good for frying? I only fry veggies now, other than fried eggs and such, but for example, I fried some eggplant last night in Olive Oil (not sure what I was thinkin, as I know that EVOO smokes with high heat), and I thought the smoke would never clear the kitchen. Obviously I use EVOO for almost everything, but I need an oil that will be good for frying, please. This is what I bought tonight at the store -

    Is this OK?

Last question. These are the Omega 3/6/9 that I'm using, and I take 3 per day; 2 with breakfast, 1 with dinner.
    http://www.hmglobalmall.com/naplulom3sof1.html

Omega 3 is obviously good for your heart, but is the 6 and the 9 also aiding heart health, or aiding something else in the body? I'm not sure how many of you have seen the info-mercial, but he's on a LOT; the guy pushing Iceland Health Omega 3's ....
    https://www.asseenontvnetwork.com/vc...health/126578/

There is no Omega 6 or 9 with the above product, but, IcelandHeath's Omega 3's would be cheaper for me than the 3/6/9 that I'm now taking. My question is this: Is the 3/6/9 more beneficial to me health-wise, or the Iceland Heath straight Omega 3's? There is rampant heart disease in my family is why I'm so concerned about doing the best thing for my heart. I've also considered purchasing the Iceland Health Omega 3, and switching off every-other-day between the 3/6/9 and the straight 3's...... but again, I can't afford to cheat my heart out of the best possible solution. I also canNOT NOT NOT take Statin drugs (almost died from them in April after taking them for only 2 weeks), so the proper Omegas are my only source of driving down my cholesterol, which HAS improved this past year.

My bloodwork this year with NO statins:
    Total - 207
    LDL - 133
    Tri - 125
    HDL - 49
Not the best, but by far not the worst I've seen.

Thank you in advance to whomever will address my questions.

Goodness... I know diddly about supplements, but for frying oil I usually use canola. Olive oil is wonderful, but does add a distinctive flavor to what's cooking. I usually use olive oil for the more savory dishes. Just wanted to give your thread a bump. Best of luck to you finding answers.

Lil', I think CoQ10 is fine along with L-Carnitine (these Dr. A recommended). I use CLA, L-Tyrosine, DHEA, 7-Keto, a good multi and alpha lipoic acid. I get them here: www.vitamins.com. These are a good price and a good product.

I am not too sure about the vitamins, but I have been playing with oils, like coconut and grapeseed and a "mediterranean blend" that I am liking. None are really good for high heat, but for lightly sauteeing my veggies and such, it is interesting to see what the differences are.

Just an encouragement to try things out and see what you like. For example, I like to do my salmon in the coconut oil (not a strong flavor at all) AND I like to put it in my hair! ( the oil, not the salmon).

Wish I new more about hte supplements.

                Re: Multiple questions....

For cooking oils, use one with a high smoke points. If you do deep frying, something like peanut oil would be more suitable than olive oil or butter. But if you are doing sauteeing, olive oil (non virgin) would be okay to use. For my sautees, I tend to use animal fat---chicken, to be exact. Whenever I make chicken stock, I save the fat that I skim off the stock and use that for my saute oils.

About the Omegas....People are pushing the Omega 3s because the Standard American Diet is higher in the Omega 6s than it is 3. Ideally, we should be getting an equal amount of those oils. This link explains it: http://www.fatsforhealth.com/library...hin_on_fat.php

Supplementing with them, I think really depends where you are in the Atkins Diet. If you eat a wide variety of foods during your OWL, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance phases, you'll be eating foods that naturally contain the 3s, 6s, and 9s. If you're the type of Atkineer who doesn't eat a wide variety of foods, then you might need the supplements more.

There are two very good books about fats. One is The Hampton's Diet by Fred Pescatore, MD and the other is Know Your Fats by Mary P. Enig, PhD. Pescatore's book outlines a low carb diet (basically it's Atkins without frankenfood, which makes sense because Pescatore worked for Atkins before the Atkins empire started creating low carb fake foods.) It has an excellent review of fats and oils, and goes through the cooking oil thing. It's very readable. Enig's book is alittle more science-centered, but the whole book is about fat.

As for coenzyme Q, I don't know anything about it.....

                Editing to add...

About the Omega 3s....For what it's worth, I think you waste your time taking the vegetable-based supplements, like flax oil. In order for your body to use the Omega 3s in flax oil, it needs to convert it to a usable form. The usuable form is EPA. Don't get me wrong, your body can convert the flax omega 3 to EPA, but takes time and it isn't a 1-to-1 conversion. In other words, 1 gram of flax Omegas doesn't convert to 1 gram of the fish oil Omegas. The conversion rate is something like 12 or 15-to-1. Fish oil, however, contains EPA and DHA---no need for your bod to do any converting.

                  Re: Multiple questions....

looks like you got all your answers already.
to decide if you can use an oil to fry you need to know its smoke point. here is a great chart
                  http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/Colle...mokePoints.htm

remember you also need to use a no transfat oil and a nonhydrogenated one.

Omegas according to Dr Atkins don't need to be exactly balanced but in a ratio with the Omega 3 much higher then the 6s. since we get plenty of 6s in our diet there is no need to supplement with them.
you can buy your vits seperately or in combinations whatever you prefer but make sure you are taking the correct fo your body amounts.
