  • Dont think i'm on Atkins

I just wanna say that no matter how i try to do the Atkins Diet Properly i fail constantly, (and yes i have read the book)
what i realise that works for me is just eating what ever i want and count the carbs, and i make sure to stay below the 20 grams per day.
when i get to my desired weight then i'm gonna just up the carbs until i stop losing weight ( thats my plan)
i eat eggs and bacon for breakfast, Coffee
    chicken salad for lunch
    and tuna for dinner
    nuts for snack
and 2 liters of water every day
    excersise 1 hour every day
this just an example of a typical day for me
sometimes i will have an Atkins shake for breakfast ...and i still lose weight i lose about a pound per week..if i eat a peice of chocolate i add it to my carbs for the day,or if i eat a piece of friut i count it.. but this is very rare.
    i just feel restricted sometimes...
am I on Atkins or just Low Carbing

    1.5 L water per day

Well, in the wise words of sidparadise:

    LOL

    Sounds like low-carbing to me.

Ye i agree. Ur just low carbing. At the end of the day I guess that you should do whatever works for you. Like some people do Weight Watchers or Slim Fast. At least ur staying with the exercise so ur skin will tone. I dunno what else to say. I'm not gona have a go at you for not following Atkins by the book because I feel that we are all free to make our own choices. But all of our food choices in the past have got us to where we are today - too fat and unhealthy.

Re: Dont think i'm on Atkins

I have read and been told by some poeple that they have followed the Atkins diet properly.. yes they lost weight but they felt restricted and decided to just Low Carb after they lost the pounds
also from Jessica Simpson she said she felt restricted.
I mean when u go to the movies they dont have chicken salads there ...every thing in the snack bar is carbs like chips and chocolate, gummi bears nachos ,or i'm gonna waste my money on hotdogs and only eat the suasage..what i do is eat 1 cup of Popcorn and add it to my carbs for the day
I mean its great for all the poeple who have been doing Atkins and losing weight i wish i could follow it correctly, but this just works for me

Hmm, your menu is an extended induction menu. Dr. Atkins said you could have nuts and still call it "induction" AFTER the first two weeks.

As far as fruit or popcorn or whatever, if you followed the rungs, you could have all of that and still be doing Atkins. I've been climbing the rungs and I eat everything you mention.

Looks like Atkins to me and if it's working for you and your losing weight, then more power to you.

Re: Dont think i'm on Atkins

Like validrouge, I have climbed the OWL ladder and so am able to have fruit, nuts and whole wheat products etc as part of my Atkins 'diet' food choices.
Not tried popping corn yet as it was never one of my 'weaknesses' but might one of these days - I have the machine and the corn in my pantry somewhere!

So if you wanted to 'do Atkins' there is no reason to feel you would be deprived of anything once you reach your goal weight except overrefined flour and sugars!

Just spend the first 2 weeks on induction eating only from the allowed foods list, then start to add the other food groups in the stated order to see what foods affect you (if any) and discover how many carbs you can eat and still lose weight in preparation for a lifetime at goal weight without ever needing to 'diet' again

As I started with the need to lose half my body weight to get healthy I dont think just cutting the carbs would have worked for me. as it has for you with much less to lose.

I found the strict structure of Atkins induction to be more of an enabling experience rather than a restriction as I didnt have to make too many decisions - if it wasnt on the allowed list I knew not to eat it - and so I was able to follow the rules without too much frustration.

But we are all different, and as you seem to have worked out a low carb plan that works for you then on the lines of 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' why not carry on your chosen WOE?

Just because you are not 'doing Atkins' there is no reason to feel you need to justify your food choices to those of us here who are following the rules laid down in DANDR 2002 more strictly.

Did you know we have a 'sister' board that is not an 'Atkins' board but a general lowcarb board?
              http://www.lowcarbbulletinboard.com/diet/index.php
You might feel happier posting there as most of the members there (like you) have adapted the principles of the low carb lifestyle to suit their own wants and needs and you wouldnt perhaps feel you needed to defend your food choices there.

Like all the other posters I am glad you have found a way of eating that works for you and wish you well in your lowcarbing lifestyle!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: Dont think i'm on Atkins

Leecy, you only have 10 lbs left to lose, you should be concentrating on how to include healthier carb foods, like popcorn (without transfatty "butter"), into your diet so you don't backslide once you reach goal. That is why the rungs work so well, because we must learn how to choose good carb foods in the proper amounts so we can maintain.

My concern for you is your lack of veggies! Why not toss a few veggies into your menu? They won't stall you and you will be healthier.

Re: Dont think i'm on Atkins

                  leecy,

Your plan is very close to Atkins.

Do you really need to eat at the movies?
I don't eat things at the movies, unless it's like a low carb bar or something.

My plan is very flexible and liberal, but I stick within the bounds of the OWL.

Check out this blog post I did.

At the end of the day you are going to have to restrict something in your life, and i would rather follow the Atkins so-called restrictions than any other diet!

Well you guys thank you so much (pesidentholmes, Validrouge LC_Dave..i thought i wasnt doing Atkins at all, i can follow the induction for 2 weeks straight but after that i crave nuts and a peice of fruit
as VALIDROUGE said its an extended induction...great
I know this diet works...so i'm glad i'm actually doing it and i want it to be my way of eating for the rest of my life.

                      hi leecy
Rather than doing an extendedinduction and adding non-induction foods to it you might fare better by doing just the initial 14 days as per the book first then moving into OWL.
With the amount of weight you want to lose you will not gain anything from staying on induction longer than the 2 weeks, so would be better off then starting to reintroduce other foods (5 net carbs and in the order laid down).
By the time you find your CCLL and reach goal you will be eating a balanced varied 'diet' which will allow you to remain at goal weight by following the maintenance phase of Atkins.
