  • Question About Artificial Sweetners

So I've read the book, I've read the board...I know that aspartme isnt the ideal sweetner....that one should use sucralose *splenda*....first of all...I think splenda tastes gross....I bought some and used it in an induction friendly recipe and...well.....lets just say I threw it all in the garbage...so that is definately not the thing for me *as far as recipes and cooking go*....but what about in things like drinks and jello? I see you guys posting things like "look for the ones without aspartme".....well I cant find any that dont have that in it.....what about putting some brands out there so I know what to look for? Everything I pick up has the aspartme in it....I'm really just curious where those of you who can find ones with sucralose in it are getting it at and which brand it is.......

    Thank you in advance.

Diet Rite cola has Splenda and comes in various flavors that are really good. My DH and his parents all thought the Diet Rite was better than any diet drink they ever tasted and they are Diet Coke and Diet Sprite fans.

When you get on the dairy rung there is a Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate sweetened with Splenda.

There are several more items, but these are the first two that come to mind.

    Hope this helps.

The only jello I know of that is sweetened with Splenda is Jolly Rancher, it comes in premade cups but its hard to find. You can make your own jello from plain gelatin though and then you can sweeten it with whatever you want.

Thanks MoG...I'll keep an eye out for that one too....does it say "sugar free jolly rancher jello" or is it just all jolly rancher jello?

*btw....just a side note...i call my daughter butterbean all the time *

I agree. It has a nasty aftertaste. Some people find that by cutting the amount used in recipes, it's not so bad. Maybe try using 1/2 or 1/3 the amount the recipe calls for.

The Diet Rite is good but I usually buy Diet Hansen's soda. It comes in a 6-pack vs. a 12 pack and it may cost a little more but I think it's worth it. They offer untraditional diet soda flavors (Kiwi-strawberry, Tangerine-Lime, Grapefruit, ect..) Just make sure you grab the DIET because there do make regular versions along with some sugar-loaded smoothie thing.

I was able to buy it when I lived in Texas at HEB. I also can buy it in Washington State at Trader Joe's, but that probably doen't help you any. It's usually found in the soda isle but towards the end were the glass bottles of pop is sold.

              From their website: http://www.hansens.com/products/prod_diet.php

Diet Hansen’s Soda is sugar-free, aspartame-free and has zero carbs. There are no artificial colors or flavors, no sodium, no caffeine, and no preservatives. Our diet sodas are sweetened with Splenda® brand sucralose, a safe, no-calorie sweetener with no bitter aftertaste that tastes like sugar because it’s made from sugar. All Hansen's Diet Sodas are gluten free and dairy free. Diet Hansen’s Sodas are available in a variety of great-tasting natural flavors derived from extracts of exotic fruits and spices from around the world.

Diet Hansen’s Sodas can be found in the premium soda section of many grocery stores as well as specialty stores and club stores throughout the U.S.

I also hate the taste of Splenda in most things, especially in SF cheesecakes. Go to Netrition and order some Erythritol. It's a wonderful sugar alcohol that does NOT cause gastric distress. It doesn't taste good all by itself, but when you blend it with Splenda, there's a wonderful "synergy" and they cancel out each others' aftertastes. Hope this helps.
