  • I need to vent about something...

I guess it's the thought that counts.....

Next week is my birthday and because of days off, etc., they decided to celebrate it today. So guess what is in the break room for this celebration?.......cake, a huge bowl of salsa and 3 bags of corn chips.

They all know I'm doing Atkins and they all know what I can and can't eat because they've all done it at some point. I'm not giving in and eating the cake or the chips to make THEM happy.

Am I just being too senstive about this? I feel like it was inconsiderate and just another excuse for them to have the cake.

It was an excuse for them to have cake. What better gift can you give yourself than knowing that by sticking to your guns and not giving in that by the time your next birthday rolls around, you will be a shadow of what you are today. Being summertime, my family has all these get togethers and nothing but the meat is atkins friendly, they where laughing at what I ate. But know, they cant believe how much weight I have lost.
That makes watching them eat all the carbs even sweeter. They know Atkins works, but they dont have the will to do it.
I say let them eat cake, enjoy your party, and of course....Have a great birthday.
Another day, in a new weigh!!!

I don't think you're being over sensitive at all. If they know you're on Atkins they know you can't at those carb laden items. The "just one bite" chant that so many of us hear is what starts us on the road to cheating and giving up. Don't cave! Let them eat cake...and reap the benefits of an inflated booty

Make yourself a mock danish...they're yummy and induction legal. Happy early birthday too

I honestly think they just figured since it was your birthday then your diet wouldn't matter. It's a typical way of thinking and is probably the reason they weren't able to stick to Atkins. So don't get your feelings hurt - for your own good. They weren't out to tease you or convince you to break your WOE. They did it with good intentions, but you were still right to resist and we're proud of you for that. Stating that the cake is beautiful but you really can't risk having a pice should give them the message for next time.

Way to stick to your diet!! Happy be-lated birthday. If someone wants something bad enough, they will do what it takes to get it. Maybe your friends figured it wouldn't matter because it's just "one piece of cake", but they were wrong, because it does matter. If they weren't upset when you didn't eat any, then they probably didn't mean any harm by it! Keep up the good work!

              I made it through... yay!

Nobody really seemed like it upset them I didn't eat the cake... they were probably just happy to have more for themselves. LOL ! The salsa was homemade and wonderful - I had some with the green pepper strips I'd brought in yesterday and then put some on top of my legal burger I brought for lunch. No tortilla chips for me either!

Staying legal was more satisfying than eating that cake or chips would have been!

Hum...if you were a recovering alcoholic, would they serve you alcohol? If you're on a diet, then why serve you something that is going to knock you off your road? I feel that it was inconsiderate on their part -- you were the birthday girl after all.

Since you are just starting, I would say you would have to decline the offer an explain you are changing your lifestyle. Thank them and move on. Trust me, they will eat the cake themselves.

I will note though, there are time when it is tough. I have had a few dinner parties where it would have been extremely rude to sit through dinner and not eat what the host made. So, while it may not be the best thing to do, you need to make the best of a situation and pick the best thing for you to eat.

Good luck. It is a long process trying to educate about your plans, if you even choose to say anything at all. I did in the beginning but now, it is too much work. Everyone has an opinion and to be honest, it doesn't matter what they say or do. The choices you make are yours, not theirs. If it was easy to be thin, we all would be.

That's what irritated me so much, I'm not just starting. I started in November of last year and they've watched my eating habits change for months now. Oh well... it's over, they saw that I really wasn't going to eat cake even if it was my own birthday. Just wasn't worth it!

Thanks for the words of encouragement, artgirl. I appreciate it!

Your not sensitive. People can just be so oblivious to anything beyond there own ambitions sometimes. I can't say I haven't been there a time or two but alas that is life.

I am always surrounded by people who are munching and crunching on no-no's. Okay I know this might sound stupid to some but this really does work for some as far as the will power thing...

I went through therapy at one time to help with anxiety and stress. And the number one thing I learned was visual techniques to help cope with uncomfortable situations. Okay I used the basic concept and with the help of Atkins apply it to food now. First I always try to visualize myself at my goal weight and it helps when you are feeling the burn during exercise. But the funny part is dealing with people eating no-nos around me. I turn them into little piggys . Okay who laughed ? It's the same theory as visualizing people in their underwear when you're making a public speech. Visualize them as balloons, cows, pigs, etc. something you equate as being large. Not only is it worth a good laugh but it reminds you what your goal means to you. I don't want to be a ________! (I am not saying being over weight makes you any of the things I mention. Just as a subconscious symbol of the negative self )

Happy birthday and keep up the great work!
