  • Stressed, need some support

    Hey Everyone,
Well first right out the bat, I was in the hospital for 4 days for kidney stones. The doctor said it could of been from my change of diet, two much green veges and I needed more water. I'm ok, but they pumped me with all these fluids and they made me eat, the hospital crap. Now your girl was standing strong like, can I get a steak with a salad, they looked at me like i was nuts. Needless to say I was 177 when i went in, looking good but in pain. But now i'm 186..9lbs AAAggggHHH !!!!! I just want to cry. I'm glad i'm better, but I'm like how do i start all over. I just feel stressed out about the whole thing. My hubby says i don't look different, but i think i do. For the morning so far, I just had a glass of crystal light. I'm about to go make me so breakfast..but I feel like giving up..is my body out of wack? will I loose again? i'm thinking so much things now...I had a goal of 175 by August 1 and i was right there and now this. I'm off track.. i need some support family..I just had to release all of that..thanks

dont worry, It's most likely water weight and will come back off. Remember this is a way of eating for life, and not a diet, and there will be ups and downs, and times like this that are out of your control. dont stress too much about it, Just pick up where you left off the weight will start coming off again, and you will be fine.

Did your dr. seriously say you were eating too many green veggies? that actually made me laugh, i've never heard of health issues being cause by eating too many veggies?

two much green veges and I needed more water
Well these are both easy to take care of. Drink more water... I'm saying this in my Mom tone.

Next, eat some different veggies. Get out your list of acceptable veggies and start picking some that aren't green and see what you come up with. Maybe some tomatoe slices, yellow summer squash. I'm sure there are more I'm just not thinking well yet. I just got up.

From what I have read this diet won't cause kidney stones, but it can aggravate a problem that alredy existed.

I'm sorry you are feeling the pain of kidney stones. I have heard it is awful. From what your doctor said you can still do Atkins you just need to tweek what your food choices a bit. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

        Re: Stressed, need some support

I had a stint in the hospital for the very same thing about a year and a half ago. When they hooked that IV in me, I knew my diet was going out the window. I blew up so quickly, it made me sick.

Don't make the mistake I did though. Since I was a little overweight all ready, I used it as an excuse to go on a SIX month bender!!! In my mind, I was all ready fat, so what was the difference. Looking back, it was just stupid. I could have easily jumped back into Atkins and simply choose not to. Boy, do I regret it now.

I now weigh what I did AFTER I got out of the hospital. What I'm trying to say is, don't look at the downside. Don't use it as an excuse. Don't think you're all ready overweight and so what. Don't give up!!!!!

you will be back in the Atkins swing in no time if you take it one bite at a time. remmeber how fast those initial pounds come off when you started shedding your glycogen stores with their excess fluid stores? well you get to lose them twice now so don't worry you will right back down to your Atkins weight in a few days.

Did they capture your stone and determine what type it was so you'd know what caused it?

From the information here about kidney stones, your Dr. could certainly have suggested more likely causes of the stones, which are very common. I'd guess your doctor is merely predjudiced about the Atkins diet, so he puts the blame there, when in reality a wide variety of causes (too many greens not likely among them) result in crystals precipitating in your urine. Bottom line, acid urine is bad, extra water is good, too much of some supplements or soda pop is bad, etc.
BTW, I agree 10# gained in 4 days is likely to be reversed quickly, as it must be mostly water unless the forced 7000 calories per day into you.

              Re: Stressed, need some support

Do you drink soda...a renal doctor that I work with said caffiene, soda...even caffiene free, calcium supplements not calcium from food it seems causes the vast majority of kidney stones.
I told him that I do Atkins and he said as long as your kideny function was not impaired...that would mean an elevated BUN and creatinine that Atkins was not a problem but drinking lots of water was essential with any weight loss program to help flush out the kidneys. I'm sure if your BUN and creatinine was elevevated they would have told you and said NO more Atkins. If your kidney do not function properly you have to limit total protien intake...but the rest of us the kidneys take care of it for us.

If you eat a lot of greens like collards, turnip, spinach, kale ...a compound called oxylate is found in these great low carb and highly delicious vegetables and that can aid in the formation of some kinds of stones...so maybe if you are eating greens daily maybe try every third day or every other and of course drink plenty of water.

My DH had kindey stone...highly painful...cut out the soda and drinks more water and really made no additional changes...and no reoccurance

Quana! I'm sorry you've been sick!! Don't let it deter you. You've been given some great advice here already, just follow it and get right back to your plan. Think of this as only a temporary setback in the grand scheme of things. You've been doing a fabulous job so far.
