  • My stove is about to die!

Sorry this is kind of off topic, but I have to cook the Atkins food. KWIM We have been having problems with the oven for awhile now. I want to get a new one, but there are so many options and price differences that I'm confused.

What is a convection oven? Is it worth spending hundereds more?

I know I want a gas, freestanding, self-cleaning oven. Other than that I don't know. What do you love about your stove?

A convection oven has a fan in it that circulates the hot air. It supposed to improve cooking time because the air is circulated.

Frankly, I have a regular oven.

Post this in the Food/Chat forum too because someone's bound to have a convection oven and can give you opinions about it.

Re: My stove is about to die!

What I love about my stove is there's a non-working microwave oven suspended above it, which I use as a lit spice cabinet, and an oven below it that I store pans in most of the time. I think the last time I used that oven was to bake cookies for Christmas in 2004.
I prefer to cook on the stove, in my freecycle microwave on the counter, or on the grill.

Do they really make self-cleaning gas ovens??

the nice thing about convection is you have options of convection bake or roast or regular bake or roast ....I am so happy with my oven (well I actually have double wall mounted ovens) and a cooktop separate on the side ...that I cried when it went in

Are you saying that you have to have an electric stove to have the convection oven? I have to have it all in one unit and I definately prefer gas.

At least it works some of the time right now. It gives me a chance to research what I want to buy. We had issues the other night when I was in the middle of cooking dinner on the grill and it ran out of gas. Then I went inside to put it in the oven and that wouldn't work. I got out our camping grill and finally made dinner. LOL

COVECTION OVEN----YES!! By all means if you can afford it -- it is so worth it. I am going to get a smaller unattached unit -- kinda like a microwave size one. But I wish I had it as part of my stove. I used to cook witha convection oven when I coked at my Friends Diner..... Oh it is the best..

You will fall in love with it... It cooks so evenly , smoothly-- Oh I just can't explain it..

Re: My stove is about to die!

I found one that is $1200. The cost freaked me out, but with the amount of cooking I'm doing and not eating out, it just makes sense to have something great. Did I justify it enough? I have heard they are great, but I really didn't understand what it did other than cook faster.

                  A convection oven rules !!!!
That is if you have a TRUE convection oven, so one that blows hot air into the ovenspace and not one that has topheat and bottomheat and then just circulates THAT heat,
It should have a third heater built in, this way you need less heat to get the same results (so you use less electricity).
Also it doesn't really matter where you put your trays, so you can bake three lasagnas in three levels (just to give an example) and they will all three come out the same at the same time, so not that the top one will be burned on top and the middle one not done yet, that's what they mean your stuff will cook more even.
Another advantage is that when you put a big piece of meat in it will heat fast on all sides so it will close the meat fast and that means it will keep the juices inside the meat : juicier meat !!

Re: My stove is about to die!

I love Convection cooking especially for baked goods. The movement of air makes for more even cooking and browning. The stove for me is daily use thing, so IMO buy the one that you want and you'll use. You will definitely get your money out of it.

Not to discount the experts' opinion we have here at ADBB, but I always found the Appliance forum @ ths.gardenweb.com to be extremely knowledgeable about which stove was the best to buy.

Re: My stove is about to die!

I love my gas stove/oven. The only option I would make sure I got next time I have to buy one is to have the broiler in the oven itself instead of in a drawer at the bottom! Its basically a waste of space in the bottom like it is. The heat is way too close to the food and there is no space to adjust it. Other than that I love it!

I want one that does that too. I always see a drawer for pans on the bottom with electric stoves. I'm hoping that I can find one like that with gas. I hate the broiler on the bottom. I always feel like I need to sit on the floor to flip steaks. I have to get my rear to the store and start checking some out before the stove croaks!
