  • Dumb question...but do carbs leak?

Okay, I know I'm getting the Dumb Award, but I honestly don't know...
Today I had to spend 12 hours on campus, eight of those at the library.
I forgot my lovingly prepared cucumber-fish-dill salad at home, therefore I had to find something at the cafeteria. Finally, amongst pizza slizes, pasta gratin, bagels, muffins, and cereals, I found two soups. Didn't want to get the cream of broccoli (it had mashed potatoes in it, and I thought it was probably made with flour and milk), so I opted for the noodle chicken broth. Of course I didn't eat the noodles (and carrots), not a single one, but I'm wondering if those, after bathing in that hot soup for hours are actually "giving up" carbs.
If you put fat in soup, it will cover everything. Does the same logic apply to carbs? Have I cheated without even knowing it?

I think you are fine. I have nothing to back it up, but I don't think carbs leak. Not a dumb question, but an interesting one I haven't heard yet.

Carbs DO leak!!! Ever cook a pot of spaghetti and look at the water after it cools off? It Gels because of all the starch in the water (just like using corn starch to thicken gravy). This is why rice gets sticky, too, unless you rinse it after cooking.

That's interesting, Boonie. I guess to be safe, I wouldn't eat that type of food again.

I agree with boonie. They leak (interesting term). The reason they put noodles in soup is to add a thickener. But you really didn't have any choice and I think you took the best option considering. Just stay on track.

Re: Dumb question...but do carbs leak?

I think this has been covered elsewhere regarding eating pot roast cooked with potatoes, etc.

Someone suggested that making the gravy from the liquid would probably add carbs from the potatoes.

However, you chose as well as you could, and you should be proud of yourself for not only thinking of good options, but asking so you could be better informed for the future.

of the given choices your soup was better but carbs are water soluble and do contaminate everything the get added to in cooking. How many were actually in your broth would be hard to tell.

                    Gack!

I had no idea there was such a thing as carb runoff! Something to remember when I finally hit goal and head into maintaince...picking out the potatoes in soup = not good enough, holy buckets!

I wonder how many carbs snuck into my diet when I was buying vegetable soup at the deli almost every day 4 or 5 months ago (quit eating out since I went back into induction then OWL thank god)?

Yikes! Thank you everyone for educating me! I should have put my snack immediately in my bag after I prepared it.
I'm just glad that the soup didn't stall my weight loss. (but I have to say that I was incredibly tired for about two hours after eating the soup. Proof enough, that Atkins is right!)

Re: Dumb question...but do carbs leak?

the amt of carbs leaking from a carrot are not a big deal and I sure as heck would not worry about a veggie based soup with carrots in it....if it has no potato or pasta...however anything that has flour in it like the noodles or is really starchy like potato ... ..yup like Boonie said they leak into the broth....however if you are hungry and do not eat anything you are going to be in worse shape than a few starchy carbs in soup could make you ..so I say eat rather than starve ...especially if you are going back to class!!!

Yes... a great question. Although carbs do leak, I don't think the amount leakage from an average amount of potatoes in a portion of soup would be too devastating. Why I say that, I don't know...but I guess it's just a gut feel. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

I thikn it'd be alot simpley because we used to make potato stew - just boil potatoes in water and add some ham at the end. It was very thick just from the potatoes.
