  • I'm feeling abandoned.

I am feeling like I have been left on the woods with no compass to help me home. I have been very sucessful with the Atkins plan. I was comfotable with my carb limit...about 45-50 grams. Now I am finding the basic foundation to my eating plan have disappeared from the store shelves. The vitamins, essential oil supplements, my Atkins 3 gram yogurts, low carb cereal, and 5 gram/slice bread is no longer to be found. I was using the baking mix to cook with....can't find it anywhere. So I am going without the few carb allowances I had given myself, and slowly gaining weight. Waaaaaahhhhh!!!!!

Yeah, there's no doubt that low carbs and Atkins in particular are on a downward swing now. I tend to order what I need online. It's still thriving, you just have to look a little harder to find it.

      Re: I'm feeling abandoned.

Whoah, Whoah!! Get yourselves to the Food and Cooking Forum on this site right away!!!! Seriously, you can do Atkins (probably more successfully than you have using those products) WITHOUT USING THOSE PRODUCTS AT ALL!!!!

You don't need any of it. Fresh produce, fresh meats, nuts, legumes, fruits, whole grains is all you need and none of it will be taken off the shelves!!! EVER!!!

The reason they are disappearing off the shelves is because people have realized that
      1) Most of those products hinder your weight loss!!!
      2) Most of those products can be made at home and TASTE MUCH BETTER and not be filled with fake food preservatives!!
      3) They are way overpriced...and you can make them yourselves (much better) for a heck of a lot cheaper!!

Go check out the food and cooking forum right away and see what you're missing!!!

        Re: I'm feeling abandoned.

I have found the viatamins on Ebay, but they all have expired dates on them. I understand the vitamins are no longer being made. (Atkins Basic 3 and Dieter's Advantage...Essential Oils.) The cereal was Morning Start I believe. Three varieties, Blueberry, Almond Crunch something like that. I have been on the plan for 3 years. Lost 50 lbs and satisfied to move up the ladder to a slower weight loss/maintenance. I am really having a hard time getting things under control and finidng low carb anything. Splenda is my friend.

I ordered a bunch of stuff from Vitacost yesterday... they still have a lot of the genuine Atkins products and they also have other manufacturer varieties that are equivelant and cheaper

If you are in maintainance you should be able to add regular yogurt (1 container of plain yogurt has 8-10 g's), Kashi go lean, or all bran cereal, steel cut oats, or regular (not quick cook) oatmeal. If you did OWL you should know which of these foods you can have and not cause you issues.

Bake mixes can be purchased online from a few sites, I know alot of ppl here order from Netrition.com.

Vitamins do not need to be Atkins brand, I use flax to get my omega 3's, and take Walmarts generic brand of vitamins.

Eating foods and taking vitamins that have the Atkins brand label are not what made you lose weight.

            HTH.

You can also ask your grocery store to 'special order' things that you need. I've found that most of them are more than happy to please their customers in order to keep them. I've never used the frankenfoods. I substitute acceptable items for my cooking. For example, if I am baking chicken, I use smashed pork rinds with parmesean cheese and other spices. It tastes great and less carbs than using the baking mix.

Anytime I've had a 'gain' in weight, I immediately adjust my plan. I have it written down in my journal. I've changed it many times because my body has repeatedly changed directions on me. Don't sit back and let small gains turn into huge ones. Act immediately. Find substitutes for the items you can no longer purchase. Get on the phone and call around to find your vitamin supplements. Up your activity and exercise routines. Take action now and do it frequently whenever you are struggling.

You could try supplementwarehouse.com - it's where I get my daily vitamins from. Apparently they have a ton of Atkins things (including the vitamins you were talking about) and will match any competitors price by 5% (you just need the website and competitor price). The Kashi Go Lean cereals are awesome. They're high fiber, and yummy. I don't eat the original one that looks like gerbil doody, but the others (including their version of hot cereals) are good good. I would agree with everyone else that Atkins foods are Frankenfoods, but there are other options through other companies if you want to continue with the same foods you're used to.

Also try netrition.com. A great site for low carb stuff. But I agree with Valid Rouge and Heidi - 99.99% of what you eat should be real whole food - the stuff that will never be taken off the grocery store shelves, the stuff on the perimeter of the store.

Also, look at some of the low carb recipes and cookbooks. There are some great ideas of substitutes for all the items you mentioned.

As for supplements, I use a regular multi vitamin/mineral supplement from my local drug store. Everything else I've been able to find either at the drug store or the health food store. Don't give up!!!

Touché, Stacy and ValidRouge - you said it best!! Kudos!!

Those products are NOT what you want to be your way of eating for life. They are a marketing bloy beneficial primarily to their bottom line; that's WHY they are disappearing - people are starting to realize they are much better off eating heathy (much less expensive, too) Real Food.

I use the vitamin one a day weight smart and it works wonders for me (and is a major brand in every store). The Atkins stuff is way overpriced and you can use real food. Atkins isn't about buying all the products they sell like Weight Watchers--it's about figuring out how to eat real food in a smart way.

That's what will keep your weight off, not the Atkins baking mix.

It is where I shop (Publix) .. I eat Nature's Own Wheat and Fiber, 7 grams per slice, 2 fiber = 5 grams per slice and its great!

                            Re: I'm feeling abandoned.

Well, if you really want it, I believe Walmart still sells the Morning cereal but they tend to move it around in their stores to the diabetic/soy product section or with the sports drinks and bars--both those being in the main part of the store in the back (in a tiny section buy the chips--go figure!), not in the pharmacy area where they used to. I know they still sell Carbdown milk at least, it seems to be very popular here in Irving. They almost had a riot when they tried to take it away.

As for the vitamins, I agree with everyone, you really don't have to have Atkins vitamins but I have to say I miss them too. I watched a report on 60 minutes last year that talked about how much "vitamins" are we really getting in our vitamins and they say that most vitamins have more impure non-vitamin fillers in them or sometimes even worse things because they are not regulated nor watched over as they should be. Dr. A was on it for a brief moment when they went tot alk to him about his vitamins and they tested his and they found he had the best stuff. That is what I miss most about Dr. A being alive--the quality of his stuff. Just find a really good vitamin company, I would try health food stores versus going to Kmart brand or something like that. I use Melaluca vitamins because I trust them and know they are good.

But like everyone said, you don't really need all that low carb stuff anyway. Natural is best and in the old days nobody ran down to the store for some margarine, they just made real butter from Bessy's milk out back! LOL! But I feel ya, what I miss is the low carb salad dressings they used to have. It was nice to actually taste a low carb french or itatlian dressing. Now, Walmart has even pulled carbwell from its shelves--at least the salad dressings anyway. Lemon gets boring after a while. Ketchup is really one of the only two low carb things I ever bought at the store. If they touch my low carb ketchup, I will go to Heinz personally and burn the plant down! LOL! And I don't care what anyone says, homemade recipes for ketchup suck. I have tried lots and they dont have that same kinda taste of being "real". LOL! Hang in there!

I gotta agree with the ketchup thing. I tried some low carb stuff and <gags> it was terrible. The worst part was how EXPENSIVE it was. It's now sitting in my fridge laughing at me whenever I open the door.

I wish I could find Heinz low carb ketchup in my local supermarket!
