  • burning alcohol for fuel

I feel I know a lot of Information regarding Low Carb through great sites such as this and my low carb books I have here in the house. One thing I have not managed to get info on yet is burning alcohol for fuel.

Does anyone know how fast we burn alcohol.

This sort of information would be useful when deciding whether to introduce it at later stages and what effect or delay it would have on weight loss.

Any good links or personal information would be superb.

I was actually thinking; Would it just burn to the amount of calories you drink.

IE: you drink 500 cals so it would take 1/4 of the day to burn this up or does it not work that way. Maybe the amount of units in your blood?

Something Ive always wanted to know.

Oh and would keeping up the high water drinking allow it to leave th body faster.

      So many questions

It is a known fact that some people can process the alcohol faster than others. Know your limits...

On the other hand, calories from alcohol are still calories once detoxified by the liver; your body will burn them as fast any other calories, but before it burns anything else.

If your liver is good at detoxifying alcohol (ie, more than 1 oz/hour), and you exercise a lot, that 500 calories might only take you a couple of hours, whereas a novice drinker sleeping it off may still be drunk the next morning, and not have burned it, and be hungover.

Sorry can't give you any detailed info, it's a really intersting question actually, i might have to start searching that one on the net..

I can tell you from my own experience, I still lost weight having a few drinks 1 or two nights a week, as long as I made sure i exercised the next day..for me this would be a 20 - 30 minute run. Which...trust me...is not easy to do the next day

My body must be cr*p at burning alcohol. I will go out drinking 1 Saturday night and do induction for a week and 4 nights at the gym and a week later I am either the same weight or I've gained a pound or 2. ITS PANTS!

I know when I was in the army we used to go out the night before a long rucksack march and drink a lot of beer and then a lot of water. The theory being either the carbs would help you march, or the booze would keep the pain down
