  • Do calories matter at all??

I'm in induction (day 5) and as I was making my egg salad for lunch, I was wondering if calories matter? I was thinking I wouldn't mind another packet of mayo in my salad, but then decided, nahhh -- I don't need it. My question is, would it have mattered? Yes, we burn stored fat while in ketosis, but the calories we take in must still play a role somehow, right? Yes, I am reading NDR, and maybe this question is answered there... but I haven't gotten to it yet!

Any insight on this is appreciated.

    Thanks!

Calories are not an issue at all during the induction stage. So just enjoy your food and follow the rules.

Just make sure you follow the 65% 30% and 5% rule.

please try not to confuse the Newbies!

Seriosuly though Adena, it might be worth you registering at fitday.

www.fitday.com this keeps track of what you have eaten (as long as you programme it in correctly) and will work out your Fat v protein v carb ratio's.

Thanks, Rich. But what IS the 65, 30, and 5% rule?? (Maybe I haven't gotten to that chapter in the book yet....?) Maybe it's the percent of fat, protein, and carbs food should have (in that order?), per Boonie's post? Please explain. Thanks!!

65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs per day. (obviously not exceeding the 20grams of carbs a day. And eating from the Induction legal food list.

              Chapter 11, DANDR 2002 ed

Although there is no need to count calories, they do matter. Gaining weight results from taking in more calories than you expend through exercise, thermogenesis (the body's own heat production) and other metabolic functions. Tesearch has shown that on a controlled carbohydrate program, more calories are burned than in a low-fat/high-carb diet, so there is a certain metabolic advantage to the controlled carb approach. But understand that this does not give you license to gorge.
So as long as you don't stuff yourself with food and mind your portion sizes, you don't need to count calories. But they do matter.

Re: Do calories matter at all??

BTW, I don't count calories. And I don't use fitday.com for my food journal. I just write the foods and the carbs in a notebook. But I also know if you don't stuff yourself and follow portion control, you typically will hit that ratio. For example, if you use 1 tablespoon of olive oil to dress your serving of vegetables, the chances are your meal will have that 65% fat ratio.

So follow portion control/size and don't stuff yourself. You'll do fine.

Thanks for the explanation, Rich. That helps. And I'll definitely check out fitday. My guess is that I'm a little out of whack on those percentages.

Olive oil is a good tip, Megs. I'll keep that in mind.

                  Thanks, all!
